My wife and I just spent the weekend at Barnsley for our anniversary. This place is understated in the best way. The interior of the Inn is posh without being pretentious. You get the feeling you are retreating at an affluent family's hunting estate. There are so many things to do. My wife and I opted for the horseback riding and golf. The horseback ride left a bit to be desired, but it was peaceful and therapeutic, ultimately serving its purpose. The golf was amazing. This was the best experience of our trip. We will most likely opt for the shooting grounds next time as we heard several great things. The vibe is very social, especially around the biergarten (center of the property). It felt a bit like an adult summer camp, which was great. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a weekend enjoying nature while not sacrificing amenities. This place is VERY family-friendly. I found this charming, as we have a 9-month old son and plan to return with him. I would imagine this is more of an issue in the summer months. The food was good, not great. However, they have a new restaurant, Jules, opening summer 2025. Barnsley has high hopes for Jules, and I believe they are well-founded. Barnsley includes an automatic 20% tip on every activity and service (including food & drinks). In my opinion, gratuity should always be optional, or it defeats the purpose. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and the few petty issues did not detract from a great weekend.
What an incredible and magical place! A resort that is a village of its own, nested in thousands of acres of pure nature. We found the peace and relaxation we were looking for but enjoyed their many activities. Golf, hunting, horseback riding, we even canoed in their large ponds. Kinds had a blast. We stayed at a cottage in the village and it was just magical. The unit was meticulously designed and had all the amenities of a luxury hotel. Food was awesome, we enjoyed the Woodland restaurant, the staff made it amazing and the food was delicious. The chef came out to chat with everyone dining. At night, the village is enchanted by the beauty of its lighting, the sound of nature, the bonfires, it is just so magical. Summer days at the pool for aure, we rented a cabana and the servers made it perfect. We are so excited about the new lazy river pool coming too! Everything from its grounds to its history, the ruins of the manor, the farm. At the Inn, they gave us an intro to Bourbon with a tasting, and showed us how they infuse bourbon with pecans, right there. We can't believe a place like this exists, we will definitely be back!
We were there for the day. The grounds are beautiful and the cottages looked very inviting. We chose to eat at the Biergarten before heading back home. We chose a seat, then ordered at the bar. They bring out your food from the pickup window. I had the Grilled Chicken Sandwich w/baked beans and my husband chose the Brisket Reuben w/potato salad. We watched the people in front of us get their food, eat and leave. We saw several other tables that ordered after us get their food. Still we waited with servers walking by saying our food would be out soon. Finally 45 minutes later, our food arrived. My chicken was cooked to death and very dry with little sauce or toppings at all. The baked beans looked and tasted like they came out of a can (which is odd because they have a smoker). My husband's Reuben was very tasty, but his potato salad was not. The manager came by and apologized, said he would comp our meal and offered to bring us dessert. He explained that they were understaffed in the kitchen, but it was mid afternoon and not particularly busy. We accepted the offer of dessert. 30 minutes later we finally got a couple of pieces of ice cold pie. I can't for the life of me understand why it took 1/2 an hour to put pie in a paper basket and bring it out to us. There was obviously something seriously wrong that day. It's been a week and we still haven't received our refund. I sent them an email and never heard back. They're cashless, so we used our debit card and there's a automatic 20% "service fee" they say goes to the servers (which we all know is a mandatory tip, but legally they're not allowed to call it that). In total the bill was $48 for the most mediocre to poor food and experience I've ever had at a resort. Barnsley Resort needs to get it together. This is simply unacceptable.
