It's the little things that make or break an experience. Unfortunately, Barong Resort did not live up to our expectations. Rooms look fine from afar but were unclean upon closer inspection (hair ball in shower, lines of black ants on the walls). Items in the room were not working either (toilet does not flush, shower gel pump and phone do not work). The resort, while centrally located, did not have enough soundproofing to withstand the loud music from nearby bars. There was ongoing construction, which deterred us from using the pool. Lastly, we were "upgraded" to a better room because they had to make space for another guest, which was very inconvenient as we had to pack and move twice. The only saving grace is the friendly and helpful service. Breakfast was also good.
The location is the best thing about this resort. Situated in the middle of Jalan Monkey Forest, within easy reach to many eateries, shopping and spas. The resort should have highlighted that they were undergoing renovation when I made the booking. It was not a nice experience having to endure knocking and drilling sounds when they start work at 8am in the morning. The renovation is still on-going when we left on 21 June and likely to continue for another few more months, so be warned. There is renovation above the small common pool as well. The 2 bedroom villa which I booked is certainly not suitable for 2 couples. The main bedroom is excessively huge and 3 times bigger than the small bedroom. The small bedroom doesn't even have a wardrobe or anything to hang clothes or towels with no TV. The bathroom was also tiny. The doors also cannot be locked and has a big gap in-between. They gave us only one set of keys to the main villa door when we are 2 couples, so it was very inconvenient for us to move around separately. It was most probably designed for a family with young children in mind. The bedrooms were also dimly lit with insufficient lighting. Breakfast was ok, with enough variety if you are staying more than a few days. Housekeeping staff wasn't well trained and didn't do a very good job cleaning and topping up toiletries. My friend actually witnessed the very young housekeeping staff stuffing the pillows into new pillow cases on the floor! Even when we had provided feedback to the Manager, there was no proper service recovery, just apologies. We declined the room makeup service for the rest of our stay. This resort should have the potential to be more due to its location but is very much lacking in hospitality training. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this resort at this moment due to my experience there, nor will I be back.
I had a very unpleasant experience that forced me to leave the hotel around 10 PM due to severe hygiene issues. Upon arrival, the bedsheets were stained. I asked for them to be changed. While the general staff and welcome were warm and polite, what appeared to be the hotel manager and a housekeeping staff member brought a second set of sheets that were also stained — and they intentionally folded them to hide the marks, without offering a single apology. The real shock came when I lifted the bedding further to check for more stains and discovered that the entire mattress was soaked in mold, especially at head level. This was not a minor stain — the mold was widespread and deeply embedded, indicating a long-standing problem. When I reported it, the staff admitted they were already aware of the issue, yet had done nothing to resolve it. The air conditioner was also visibly moldy, with dark streaks running from the unit — another sign of serious neglect. The management agreed to request a refund via Booking.com, which I appreciate. But the fact that I had to leave the property at night for health and safety reasons is simply unacceptable. The villa is beautiful, and the location is great. Some of the staff were genuinely kind — but none of that can make up for knowingly hiding a moldy mattress and ignoring basic hygiene and maintenance standards. I sincerely hope the hotel will take this feedback seriously and take action. 🙏
