What a beautiful, romantic, stunning hotel set in the most beautiful area of Leiden. My husband and I were attending a housewarming party nearby and decided to treat ourselves to a night at the De Baroness Van Leydon. The room was large with vaulted ceilings and large bathroom. Our room over looked the river and was centrally located. There were many lively restaurants nearby. We enjoyed lovely wine from the mini bar which was very reasonably priced and did I mention the room came with air condition? Truly a wonderful stay at a beautiful hotel. Would definitely recommend.
The location is perfect and we had a very nice reception welcome. I case you travel by car - a hotel car parking space is mandatory at this city center location. The apartment we had (first & second floor) is outstanding, modern, code, clean and welcoming. The view over the canal is beautiful. A smal problem in the shower was fixed immediately (well done). The kitchen is fully equipped, the back garden terrace is cosy and bend rooms are quiet. Unfortunately all mattresses had a plastic cover underneath the bedlinen and you are seriously sweating in the bed during the night. This was really painful!
Sadly I was disappointed. Love Leiden comes highly recommended. Our reception was good. We were in Room 3 nextdoor to the main hotel . The expression "climb into bed" springs to mind. Bathroom downstairs but a very steep climb up stairs to bed. Not great if you need to get up in the middle of the night in fact I would use the word dangerous. The hand basin in the bathroom was some thing you would put in a tiny downstairs cloakroom. Totally inappropriate for the generous space it sits in. We didn't see anyone till we checked out 3 days later! My next comment probably just shows my age. Years ago there was b&b breakfast included. A. Hotel was definitely an upgrade on a B&B. So breakfast was always included. Now I get the impression that the hotel business really don't want to be bothered providing their guests with breakfast. To this end I believe they have introduced a pricing strategy to deter breakfast at the hotel. I made a point of putting my around the breakfast room and it was always totally empty. So there is some science in what I'm saying ! Tell me I'm wrong. We enjoyed Leiden very much indeed. The people are very welcoming....shame about our hotel room. Maybe I should have explained we aren't so spritely in our late 70's. Thank you any way. Best Wishes Ann and Peter Appleby
