We stayed in the hotel, but this review is for the Chinese-style massage from Mr. Liu. It's probably too much of a hyperbole to say that it was life changing, but it was very very good. I've gotten a lot of massages in life - from deep tissue to Ayurvedic, and never have all my little pricks and pain been gone after an hour long massage. Until now. It's based on Chinese Traditional Medicine principles. The pressure wasn't strong, but somehow, it got all the knots out. Highly recommend.
I always have a soft spot for heritage and Capella Shanghai expertly blended history with modernity, and designed a product that's unique in its own right, bar none in Shanghai. If you are looking for an authentic Shanghai experience tucked away in a time capsule, this would be your best bet. Everything from the facilities to the service was impeccable. The room was a 4 story Shikumen style villa with an impluvium and open terrace. Ground floor was a spacious living room with a toilet, while 2nd floor hosted the TV room and the minibar. Stepping up half a story and you'll find the bedroom with a walk-in closet and an make-up area, above that is the main bathroom, while the 4th floor has a small open terrace. Yes, if you are not used to living in a loft it could be annoying having to constantly climb up and down to retrieve things, but the room itself more than made up for the inconvenience. Don't get me started on the hospitality, which was unlike anything I've experienced elsewhere: everyone addresses you by name, from the restaurant to the reception to the cleaning lady. The cleaners will take note of your mini-bar (all inclusive) consumption patterns and give you more of your favorite drinks;. Turndown service changes daily, from a bath bomb on our first night to steam eye masks on our second night. They also provide experiences such as walking tours and vintage bike rides which unfortunately we did not have time to enjoy. The staff all spoke excellent English so fret not if your Mandarin needs more work. Overall, what an amazing hotel and I can't wait for my next trip back.
Capella is definitely our top choice for our visit to Shanghai. This hotel truly feels like home! The unique Shikumen architecture, perfect location, and incredibly thoughtful service made our three-day stay so comfortable that we didn’t want to leave. Every staff member here feels like family or a personal butler: Thomas Zhao, Martin, Attica (not sure about the spelling), and Yilei. Their warm and attentive service made us feel completely relaxed and comfortable. Although we didn’t catch all the names of the staff, it’s clear that the entire team is exceptional. The restaurant service was also very thoughtful. For us, Capella is more than just a hotel; it’s an unforgettable experience. We highly recommend it to anyone seeking top-tier service!
