The other reviews saying that this hotel is a bit old do ring slightly true but everything was perfectly functional. The wallpaper was intact, the towels still absorbent and surfaces clean. If you're cycling around Taiwan and you simply need spacious hassle-free accommodation with a decent enough buffet breakfast then Chengpao Hotel is perfectly fine and, crucially, accepting of cyclists, unlike other hotels/B&Bs that I've come across. The room was utterly huge - you could easily fit 5+ bikes and there's a balcony - so you can spread out and organise your load/packs. If the breakfast started earlier - so that you can avoid traffic up the Wuling Pass - then I would give this place 5 stars.
The front desk staff at this hotel was very kind and had a positive attitude. The sleeping rooms are decent and comfortable with bathtubs. I give two stars because, in my opinion, this hotel isn't worth the price. I'm my opinion, the hotel seems to have been nice at one time, but hasn't aged well. The breakfast is, in my opinion, not good. I looked around but was unable to eat any of the food served. I told this to the staff, but they didn't seem to care.
This is a terrible hotel that is well past its prime. Perhaps at one point it was a great hotel but it looks like a good 30 years of doing the absolute bare minimum to keep the thing running as resulted in a worn down and pathetic excuse for a hotel. Every item you come across will show it's age and wear. The TVs are good 20 years old. The towels feel about the same they're ratty and thin. The room we moved into stunk of urine and had not been particularly cleaned well. The sheets don't look like they've had a good cleaning in a long time there are oil stains in them. The included breakfast was the cheapest slop they could find to put into a food warmer. I guess once a hotel drops down to the level of hosting tour groups they have to stop caring about quality. I counted no less than 12 tour buses come and go during the time I was here.
