Choupana Hills offers great rooms (private decks, spacious seating areas, large tub, etc) with spectacular views over the city. The pool is beautiful, but being in the hills it's often more cloudy and cool than on the coast. It is located on one of the llevadas though so there's easy access if you want to hike. Overall, the hotel seemed like a great deal. We paid the advertised rate on their website and service as well as other things like the included breakfast exceeded expectations. Note that it's a ~15 EUR taxi down to Funchal but that's a much better option than driving the narrow, steep lanes up the hotel. To get to the airport though, don't arrange through the hotel as the company they used was seriously late both on picking us up and dropping us off. I'd highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a nice relaxing stay on Madeira.

If you are fine with the seriously steep road to get there, you'll find a gem of a place. Well presented and beautifully fitted out bungalows, lovely grounds and great pools (can't speak for the Spa and associated services but I'm sure they'll equally great) and a truly fab restaurant. And the view over Funchal is pretty neat too. Don't miss out on Levada that runs through the hotel grounds.

Very nice, peaceful location up in the hills outside Funchal. The rooms were spacious & clean although I wasn't keen on the separate single mattresses which made up the double bed. The outdoor pool is fantastic (too cold in December to use it though) The spa area is nice (& free to use) but some bits need attention & sprucing up. The bar area is lovely (with free wi-fi) with great views of Funchal as is the restaurant. The breakfast had a great choice and was very tasty, the evening meals were the same if a bit pricey compared to the good quality restaurants in Funchal. The service from all the staff was excellent. Overall a very nice place & experience. Warning: later in the year being so high up means it's much colder than the rest of Funchal up there!
