You Get What You Pay For at Club Esse Cala Gonone Holiday Village English family of four with two children aged 2 and 4 Our stay at Club Esse Cala Gonone Holiday Village was a mixed experience. You really do get what you pay for. Arrival & Check-In: The first challenge was locating the reception, which is situated at the bottom of the complex. If your sat nav routes you like it did for many others from the airport, it may not direct you there correctly. Be prepared with €5 in cash for the air conditioning and TV remote deposit. We arrived on a very hot day with only cards and were refused the remotes until we had cash. This made us wonder if remotes often go missing and are considered valuable in Sardinia. At check-in, we were also hit with a few extra charges, such as for the baby cot and city tax, which I believe were mentioned in the fine print during booking. Accommodation: Our room consisted of a double bed, a single bed, and just enough space for a cot. The accommodation was tired and in desperate need of renovation—dated furniture, worn fixtures at a slant or broken, and a general lack of upkeep. That said, for the price, we weren’t expecting luxury. Facilities: The pool area was the highlight of the complex. It had multiple depths suitable for all ages, making it feel safe for young children. There were plenty of loungers available throughout the day. With very few British guests, there was no morning “towel dash” to reserve beds, which was refreshing. Breakfast: We opted for bed and breakfast only, and this was our only experience with the resort’s dining. Breakfast was chaotic. There were table numbers but no clear instructions—were we supposed to have a designated table? We ended up picking any available one, which caused some tension with other guests. The buffet was basic: pastries, yogurts, ham, and some questionable hot items like greasy bacon and watery scrambled eggs. Honestly, we were glad we didn’t book any additional meals. Atmosphere & Entertainment: The resort caters primarily to Italian families—about 95% of guests were Italian. However, everyone was welcoming, and we didn’t feel out of place as English tourists. The kids’ entertainment was entirely in Italian, which is understandable but meant our children didn’t really engage with it. Location & Dining Out: The location is excellent—just a short walk to the seafront and promenade lined with lovely restaurants. Since we only had breakfast included, we ate out every evening. We found the food and drink prices very reasonable, and the quality was excellent. Overall Verdict: We would definitely recommend Sardinia to friends and family—it’s a beautiful island with great food and welcoming people. However, we wouldn’t recommend Club Esse Cala Gonone Holiday Village. It has potential, but the resort needs significant improvement in several key areas to be considered a true "holiday village" experience.
I like to start this review with the very positive feedback about the location and easy access to the beach with the shuttle bus! But, as a negative things that we can discover during our 7 days stay was: - the services that they provide like foods (most of it the same all days and when the provide something new was not enough and waiting line was over 20 persons…) - waiters with bad attitude - Italian bartender providing wrong price and attitude ( for example the ice cream with €2.6 on the wall flyer was invoiced with €3.5 and changing the poster next day, after we noticed it and tell it) Nevertheless the most unpleasant thing that I want to point it out it’s the lack of smiling faces from people that should service us in a proper manner during this holidays with complete pension . I recommend to the interested travellers to choose a different location in this beautiful area not Club Esse Cala Gonna Beach Village!
