Crewe & Harpur Derby by Marston's Inns

Very busy on a hot Saturday afternoon. I was very impressed that I was able to book the table on line at 7.30am ! We were shown to our table & gave our drinks order, & were told there would be a 30 minute wait for the food. It was 30 mins but you don't mind,if you know that's the case . We both had fish & chips,which were lovely, & were too full for dessert.! The staff were all working hard on a very hot Saturday afternoon. I would certainly visit again.

Had to visit Derby (from Glasgow) for a family funeral, Crewe & Harpur was chosen by my wife as an overnight stop as I couldn't contemplate a 10hr round trip in one day. The pub and hotel are fabulous. It's a historic area and the staff know their stuff as well as as being friendly & efficient. As a Scot, I was impressed by the plaque & cairn in their beer garden, overlooking the river, commemorating the furthest south Bonnie Prince Charlie ventured in his forays. Furthermore, after our very pleasant evening meal, we followed a local walk recommended by the staff and found another gem 'Swarkestone Pavilion'. It's what remains of a hall demolished in 1750 and has a majestic view of the Trent & very little else now (but most likely was an Elizabethan bowling green). It was featured whilst derilict in a 1968 photoshoot for the Rolling Stones album Beggars Banquet (a fact relayed to me by one of the very knowledgeable staff) I don't think the photos were used on the album cover but they exist & can be found easily by a search - I won't post any here to avoid the copyright freaks. The building has been restored by The Landmark Trust and is can be rented for accommodation. If you're in or near Derby, it's all well worth visiting!

The staff made our night and stay! Very friendly and well looked after. Food was delicious 😋 the breakfast 10/10. Thank you so much to Kyle for looking after us.
