If you're looking for a castle stay in rural Scotland, this is for you! My husband and I loved staying here and experiencing the castle at night. However, be warned there is no AC, but a fan was provided in our room which was a great surprise. We did the Dinner and bed and breakfast stay along with Afternoon Tea. The hostess at the afternoon tea, short brown hair with glasses, was incredibly rude and we went out of our way to avoid her the next morning for breakfast. We did notify the hotel staff of this as she made other guests around us uncomfortable and was rude to them. Like denying a high chair for a baby because it will be in the way?? Strange. However, the tea and food were excellent. We greatly enjoyed the 7 course meal in the Dungeon for dinner and the staff was so friendly. Service was incredible.
Always wanted to stay at a castle and this fulfilled the dream. We stayed 2 nights. Lovely quiet location great walking trails and activities such as archery and falconry, which I recommend you do. They have a spa and steam room which is lovely. It is about 20 minutes by train from Edinburgh. I would recommend a stay here.
Lovely castle restored beautifully. Check in service was not great. Concierge did not know where our room was. No guidance or directions where various rooms and facilities are (ie spa, library, bar, restaurant, cafe). No assistance with bags which I thought might be offered for the cost of the stay. Tried to call reception from room to check on preordered wine but it was engaged so after 10 or so attempts I walked down the 2 levels to reception and receptionist was standing there. No one was on the phone. Dinner in dungeon was a nice experience and food was really nice although meals are very small. It’s fine dining and expensive (75 pounds for 5 courses) but service needs to be improved as I had to top up our water and wine several times while waiters could see our empty glasses. Bed was comfortable and nicely decorated. Showers are small and dangerous to step out of as shower door is tiny, there is a step down and tiles are slippery. Renovations being carried out throughout the reception and entry area at 7am onwards is unsafe with ladders and floor sheets blocking reception. The breakfast at the Orangery was underwhelming with bacon so dry it couldn’t be cut with a knife and extra charge for a cappuccino is unwarranted after already charging a high price. Submitted above feedback on castle website and 2 months later have received no response.
