El Fuerte

Very cool old hotel with great staff. Know going in that the hot water situation is a challenge for this old building. If you absolutely have to have it, mention that, and they will situate you on the side that is closer to the boiler. Other than that, we highly recommend that you give the Hotel El Fuerte a try. Disfrute.

The hotel, situated within a 300-year-old hacienda style building was very atmospheric—with long corridors and inner courtyards lined with eclectic decorations, that were occasionally punctured by the sounds of fluttering pigeons in flight. Our room was spacious, especially the bathroom and wash basin area. Because of this, however, the aircon may take a while to cool the room, especially in the sweltering weather of El Fuerte at this time of the year. That said, on the whole, this wasn't an issue for us. The location of the hotel, within walking distance of the plaza, was excellent. We could also easily walk over to the Museum El Fuerte-Mirador, as well as the walking path along the Rio Fuerte. Staff were pleasant, and Julia in particular took the initiative to check in whether we needed a taxi for our Chepe Express train the day before we were supposed to depart. For the majority of our stay, we could only use the WiFi from the lobby. That said, the WiFi there was strong and worked well (even for uploading videos).

Best little old style Mexico hotel. Love the decor in this place. Great service. Clean. We going on the Chepe train. They let us park our Spyder motorcycle in the garage inside their building. For the time that we were gone. Thanks so much!!!!
