I stayed here as a lodging in Koriyama when I drove from Tokyo to Sapporo. It cost more than twice as much as a round-trip flight, so I couldn't afford to splurge. That's when I found Gekko Onsen Kurheim. It can be used as both a lodging facility and a day-trip hot spring facility. The building is quite old, but it was well-maintained and I had no complaints. Even though I was staying alone, I was given a 14-tatami Japanese-style room (on the second floor). A futon was already laid out in the room. On the low table were sweets and Japanese tea bags, both of which are sold on the first floor. I entered the room and first took a break with tea and sweets. This moment was indescribable. I would have liked to have had a couple more sweets, but I guess they'd have to buy them at the shop on the first floor. After resting, I changed into a yukata and headed to the large public bath. I was drenched in sweat from hiking up Yamadera in Yamagata that day, so I headed to the hot springs early. The large public bath is neither new nor stylish, but it is spacious and features a sauna, cold bath, and waterfall bath. There's also an open-air bath outside. The view from the open-air bath is disappointing, but the moon is clearly visible. The large public bath is also kept well-maintained. My only request would be for a hotter bath. As I get older, I find myself craving hot baths. It's not too lukewarm, but I did think it would be nice if they had a hotter option. It wasn't too crowded that day, so I was able to relax, but unfortunately, the last order at the rest area (where meals are also served) was 8:45 PM! I figured I could just take a bath later, so I quickly left and headed to the rest area 15 minutes before the last order. It's a typical large banquet hall with a stage, but ordering is done at a small counter next to the stage. There were no menus there (there are menus at each table), making it difficult to order. I ordered a bottled beer and a fried chicken set meal. Since it was around 9pm, there were only about three other groups at the rest area, so it was empty. The pint beer and fried chicken set meal I ordered arrived shortly after. The fried chicken was a standard type and quite tasty. By the way, this time the accommodation was 6,050 yen. The set meal and beer came to 1,660 yen. I think it was very good value for money. These days, a business hotel room with no meals costs at least 8,000 or 9,000 yen, so Gekko Onsen is a friend to the common man, as it's easy on the wallet. By the way, the hot spring water had a slightly thick consistency that seemed good for the skin. Also, the front desk staff, both when I checked in and when I checked out, were older men (sorry for writing "old man"). Both seemed earnest and hardworking, and they were especially diligent in explaining things to me when I checked in. This is a hot spring inn that I'd definitely recommend to my friends.
