I write this because, as a tour leader, I consider some previous comments to be mean and purposefully orchestrated. I found the reception quick and efficient, the restaurant service perfect, and the rooms cozy with new mattresses—yes, we Europeans appreciate this! I think all those bad reviews, when organized among a group of people, need to be treated carefully. They are misinformation with bad intentions.
I came here with a tour group and you know it’s bad when the whole group agreed that the beds were the hardest any of us had slept on. Honestly it may have been more comfortable to sleep on the floor if there was more space in the rooms but I could barely open my bag on the floor. Additionally, the outlets were not updated and they weren’t compatible with our hair dryer that is made for European outlets! Lastly, our shower head wouldn’t stay attached when we set it up to shower and it almost fell on me when I turned the water on or off. The interior of the rest of the hotel was beautiful and very scenic, but the rooms themselves were so uncomfortable, I do not recommend staying in this hotel.
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Assisi and unfortunately, it was a big letdown. The reception gives you the impression of a nice place, but that’s where it stops. Our room was underground, with a window that looked out onto a closed corridor — no sunlight, no fresh air, just a depressing view of a wall. The air conditioning didn’t work properly: it was more of a noisy fan than a real cooling system and didn’t help with the humidity. The room smelled strongly of stale smoke, and the carpet was so worn and old it probably should have been replaced two decades ago. Walls were paper thin — when our neighbours took a shower, it felt like they were right in our room. Worst of all, cleanliness was totally lacking: we found other people’s hair on the toilet seat, in the sink, and in the shower. That’s just unacceptable. Staff at reception were not helpful at all — when we asked simple questions, we either got incorrect answers or were met with indifference. The restaurant wasn’t much better: bland food, under-salted dishes from start to finish, including the bread. Nothing stood out. The location isn’t ideal either. It’s not in the centre, and it takes about 20 minutes on foot to get to Santa Chiara. Several people in our group had to change rooms due to problems ranging from bad smells to blocked showers and even dirtier conditions than ours. They’ve clearly invested in making the reception look good, but once you’re past that, the whole place feels neglected and worn out. Definitely wouldn’t recommend staying here.
