Hacienda La Alegria

Hacienda La Alegría is truly a special place, nestled in Ecuador’s breathtaking “Avenue of the Volcanoes.” The experience beautifully blends nature, ecotourism, and a deep connection with majestic Percheron horses. The property is cozy and welcoming, and from the very first moment, you feel the warmth of the hosts, Gabriel and Paty, who go above and beyond to make every guest feel like part of the family. As a young female solo traveler, although I hadn’t originally planned to travel alone during the last three days of my stay in Ecuador, I ended up feeling safe and at peace at the hacienda. The entire team was kind, respectful, and attentive, which made all the difference. The food was delicious, and locally sourced. I especially appreciated the thoughtful detail of the traditional seven-grain soup prepared for Semana Santa. It was an incredibly comforting touch that made me feel truly welcomed. In addition to horse breeding and riding, the hacienda is home to dairy cattle, llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas. Each day felt full of learning and connection with the animals. The horseback rides are unforgettable. It’s the perfect place to unplug, breathe high-altitude fresh air at 2,850 meters, and enjoy a magical equestrian experience. I’m already planning to return for one of the multi-day rides up to the volcano summits. Saludos a Paty, Gabriel y Mauricio! Espero verlos el año que viene!

I spent a couple of weeks with Gabriel, Patricia, and Mauricio late last year at their lovely hacienda. Hacienda’s location is surreal, food delicious, and hospitality warm. It felt as if I am visiting my family in Ecuador. I had zero background in horse riding. Gabriel and Mauricio trained me in a matter of six days to go from zero to cantor comfortably and ride for a few hours at a stretch without breaking a sweat. Gabriel and Mauricio were patient in training and encouraged me to push for my best while making sure that impeccable safety standards are maintained. I was able to join Gabriel for two multi day expeditions (cloud forest and Cotopaxi) in a small group. Everything about the expedition was perfect - route planning, provisions, rideability and health of horses, accommodation, and food. While other riders in the group were quite proficient, Gabriel always adjusted the pace to make sure that I am comfortable and rode next to me for lengths of time to make sure that I am getting a hang of things. An exceptional travel experience is great, but when that gets repeated, it speaks very highly of the place and people. My wife also learnt horse riding at Hacienda few years back and had a similar experience. Gabriel, Mauricio, Paty - thanks a lot for becoming my family in Ecuador and countless warm conversations over meals! And thanks a lot for letting me enjoy a slice of heaven that you have built with love and care over decades. Ishitaa and I can’t wait to visit again!

My family had a wonderful 4 night stay at Hacienda la Alegria. The hosts were so kind and made sure we had a great stay on their absolutely stunning property. My kids, ages 5-8, loved wondering the fields with the dogs and riding horses everyday.
