We had a number of good stays at this property over the past years. Great location. The rooms are very nice, the cleanliness and state of repair of the rooms is very good. The bar atmosphere is a bit too “open” for my taste, but nice that there is a bar. It can be somewhat expensive, at certain times of the year, but the overall value is good.
This is a beautiful old hotel that has lost its lustre due to neglect. It has all the appropriate services and amenities and the staff is helpful, hospital and responsive, but it needs a thorough deep clean by a professional cleaning crew. The carpets need a good extraction or replacement and tile floors need a thorough grout cleaning. Grim and dirty on ledges, molding, and corners are visible. All the restaurant furniture is not only beat up but sticky and dirty to the touch. In the room, the bathroom floor was sticky with discolored grout. The A/C fan was so noisy we had to shut it off. The batting in the comforter on my bed was so matted and hard, it was like full of stones. Big pluses go to the staff, especially the chef at breakfast who went out of his way to make sure that I had a gluten free and dairy free breakfast. Burgers in the pub were also well prepared and tasty.
I visited the hotel to enjoy their brunch, which is served in the main breakfast hall. The food was good. However, the service was far below expectations. While I was away from my table getting food from the buffet, both my plate and my coffee were cleared without warning. There seemed to be only one or two staff members working. The table was dirty, place mat wet in coffee from previous guest. The atmosphere felt chaotic, with several guests looking confused — asking where to pay, where to find coffee creamers, or where the utensils were. Many people clearly needed assistance, and it was hard to stay focused and enjoy the experience. I think it’s important to remind the management that if this brunch service is going to remain open to the public, it should be operated properly — with enough staff, organization, and basic hospitality. Otherwise, it might be better to close the buffet altogether to avoid further disappointment.
