Attractive looking hotel. Our room was on floor 1 (second floor) which you had to access from outside. This was not so convenient as it was raining during our 1 night stay. The room was large and spacious with high ceilings. Lights were sufficient bit a little on the dim side. Bathroom was a decent size with lots of towels. The complementary disposable slippers were nice especiallysince the floors were wood and creaked with every step. I believe that all the floors were like this as we could here the people above us walking around too. Large dining area with an optional (cost) breakfast buffet. There was a musty smell throughout the building and wasn't sure if it's just because the building was old and the smell of the wood. Coffee maker and fridge were also included. There was no phone in the room so if you needed to get in touch with reception, you had to use your own phone to call or message using Whatsapp. At least the location was good, only a short walk to the center of the city, and the cost was reasonable.
A mixed experience. Pros: Hôtel de Flandre is in a very central location, it’s easy to get around the city and you can walk everywhere. Everything was extremely clean, and the reception area of the hotel (bar, breakfast room, welcome desk) are beautiful and well-decorated. Our room was clean and very spacious. We were in room 441, so right below the roof. When you get into the room you first see the bathroom & stairs, which then lead you to the second part, the bedroom itself. It’s simple, functional, there is a bed, a closet with an ironing board, a coffee machine, complimentary tea, coffee and a fridge with water. We were able to check in from 3PM, and had the possibility of leaving our luggage in a dedicated closet which was also nice. The staff was professional and helpful, and it was very quiet at night despite being there on a public holiday. Cons: Our room was boiling hot. The receptionist informed us that the A/C system had an issue/wasn’t turned on yet, only heating. Our room was way warmer than the outside and we had to leave the window open - even though it was around 23° tops (average between 18-20) that day (May 9), the heat was way too much due to being under the roof and it made it difficult to sleep. I wish we’d been informed of the unique configuration of the room we were put in (the fact that the bathroom & bedroom were on two different levels). Overall, this hotel is not the best value for money (in my opinion), the breakfast is 22€, there is no restaurant or additional amenities. Even the rooms could benefit from a bit more character in their decoration - for a boutique hotel that prides itself on being uniquely configured and authentic (which it certainly is!), a bit more of an effort could be made in the rooms (a painting, wooden floors with rugs instead of carpet), the place surprisingly lacks soul.
Great location and lovely staff but that’s where the positives end. Our room was absolutely boiling the whole time. We had to have the ac on constantly which didn’t work well. it would lower the temp by maybe 2 degrees maximum, with it constantly being on, so I had to have it on all night but it’s also one of the loudest horrible noises you could have when you’re trying to sleep in a hot room. The bathroom bin was also not changed which had old banana peels and whatever else in there. Our kettle also didn’t work so couldn’t even have a coffee after my terrible sleep And the photos of the rooms do not match with to what we received. Never got the breakfast because we seen bad reviews about it This is not a 4 star hotel, it’s 3 maximum
