Hotel Kunitomi Annex

Great traditional Japanese hotel. If you want the real experience, come here.

This hotel is located approximately 4km from Itoigawa station (45 min walk). It's old school as it can be. In the room (I had a traditional Japanese one), you have tatamis, a low-table with seats, a real table and 2 armchairs. There is a nice TV, a fridge and a safe. There is also AC, a hot water dispenser and a tea set. The staff will set up a futon for you for bed time. There's no bathroom, only a toilet and a sink. You're expected to use the public bath. But, there seems to be showers on the 4F. They provide sleepers, yukatas and obi, towels and it's ok to walk around the hotel wearing a yukata. The public bath zone is old but functional, there's an indoor and an outdoor bath. There are around 15 washing stations, so no waiting. The breakfast (included for me) is rather poor in variety, but OK. The diner (also included for me) is the "piece de résistance", you can see there's a real chef behind the food, so expect a solid traditional Japanese course meal. Overall, this hotel is good for a little breakaway, even if the building could really use some renovations Tip: Cab from the station is around 2000¥ and if you choose to walk, there's an alternative road in the forest across the river.
