The historic vibes were there, but there were many things that fell short... The shower tiles were concave enough in my room that water pooled in the center and never reached the drain (even after leaving it overnight). The plugs available that are built into the side tables and desk were supposed to be a cool touch, but anything larger than a small phone brick didn't fit, and it was near impossible to access the regular wall plugs. I was lucky that I had my international adapter, because I could turn it upsidedown and plug in my charger that way, but otherwise the angle did not provide the space needed for my charger by itself to fully plug in. There were also weird, dark stains all over the carpet. When the built-in soap pump in the shower ran out during my stay, the front desk gave me a few travel-sizes replacements, but at least one of them had already been opened and used! I did appreciate that they received and held a package for me, free of charge. My room was also unbelievably quiet, which was great! I actually wondered to myself whether or not there were other people on my floor or above me, but I know it HAD to be fully booked for the convention I was there for.

⭐ 1-Star Review My girlfriend Tia and I came to Kansas City for the first time to experience the city and film content for our travel vlog. After looking into a few hotels, we chose The Phillips Hotel—it looked stylish, historic, and full of charm. Unfortunately, our experience fell way short of expectations. We originally booked a king room and inquired about upgrading to a suite upon arrival. The front desk staff seemed new and unsure, and instead of getting help or finding a manager, we were left waiting and confused. Eventually, we were told by the manager, Linda, that we could upgrade—but the process quickly turned into a nightmare. To be greeted by such an ogre and foul presence as Linda—the manager, no less—is an embarrassment to your entire facility. She was rude, condescending, dishonest, and completely unprofessional. Frankly, she should be managing a Waffle House, not a historic downtown hotel. Her behavior set the tone for a terrible first night in Kansas City. You should fire her immediately. We came here hoping to highlight the beauty of this historic hotel and explore the speakeasy and art gallery. Instead, we spent most of our time frustrated and trying to fix mistakes that shouldn't have happened. Thankfully, two standout employees—April and Vanessa—stepped in and did everything they could to turn things around. They were kind, professional, and honestly the only reason we didn’t check out that night. That said, we later found out there were only 17 guests in the entire hotel. The lack of leadership and hospitality, especially at the management level, is inexcusable. Until that changes, we absolutely do not recommend staying here. The next night, we stayed at Crossroads Hotel, and the difference was night and day. Amazing service, great atmosphere—it felt like time stood still in the best way. If you're visiting KC, skip the Phillips and head to Crossroads instead.

This hotel needs to invest in new mattresses. And a sign to post the charges for valet service. We have stayed here before and it was wonderful but I guess in two years a lot has changed. The bed in our room was terrible. It felt like the cheapest mattress you could possibly buy. It literally caved in the moment any pressure was put on it and it wasn’t in a soft way. Also, when we stayed previously the valet was included in the stay. Considering there is no other parking in the area it should be. But they actually charged a large fee for the valet and never made you aware of the charge until you were picking up your car. The girl at the desk had no kindness about the matter either and the valet guys came over when we were questioning it like a bunch of bouncers when we simply asked where the fee was posted. They stated it was on the website but as of this review it definitely is not. The beds, service, and valet charge will keep us from booking here again. Very disappointing considering our first stay was lovely and the fact that we spent the extra to get a “nicer” room.
