This is a great hotel where I 'very often' come back. Nago-Torbole, perched on the northern shore of Lake Garda, is a place where natural beauty meets the deep currents of history. One of its most dramatic moments came near the end of World War II. On April 30, 1945, just days before Italy’s liberation, Brigadier General William O. Darby—the founder of the U.S. Army Rangers—was killed in Torbole by an artillery shell. That same day, 25 soldiers from the U.S. 10th Mountain Division tragically drowned in the lake when their amphibious vehicle sank, and 10 more lost their lives in combat in nearby Nago. These events are remembered with solemnity, and in 2025 the town commemorated the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day with ceremonies and a special exhibition titled *"Post Scriptum: Lettere dal fronte"*, highlighting wartime letters and relics from Trentino. But Nago-Torbole’s strategic and symbolic importance stretches back much further. In 1439, during the Venetian-Milanese conflicts, the Venetians carried out a stunning logistical feat called the *Galeas per montes*, hauling a fleet of 25 barges and six galleys from the River Adige over the mountains to Lake Garda using oxen and rollers. The operation allowed them to surprise and defeat the Milanese navy at Riva del Garda, and its traces can still be seen today along the path between Nago and Torbole. This dramatic setting didn’t go unnoticed by artists and intellectuals. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe passed through in 1786 during his travels in Italy and was captivated by the town’s landscape, recording his impressions in *Italian Journey*. A plaque now marks his stay in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Above it all rise the ruins of Penede Castle, once a crucial medieval fortress with sweeping views of the lake. And nearby, the glacial rock formations known as *Marmitte dei Giganti*—“giants’ kettles”—are haunting evidence of the area's ancient geological past. History, heroism, and a touch of poetry: Nago-Torbole has it all.
Family run restaurant excellent fresh breakfast - The best. Half board with dinners accompanied by the wonderfully competent and friendly Jordan were brilliant! Spotless cleaning ; decent towels. - Marketing/ guest led improvements needed as you can't pay as you go but are expected to let the hotel keep a tap but then your not given and optimised bill just a total which is no ok. So some IT input needed even a basic tap into payment on Revolut which the younger staff here should be well able to implement. Constructive criticism but Downsides nonetheless were that Single women got the worst rooms - Painted tiles in bathroom, no ledge / shelve to put things on in either the shower or the sink area which really needs improving to retain a 4 🎆 star as it's not really that. The sign outside the hotel needs upgrading to something more contemporary. If they promoted a beauty spa they have room downstairs they would make more money. Some evening entertainment would make more use of the redundant bar. Maybe some fun activities or piano music it's a waste of a resource. Card needed in room to explain there are 2 pools. I was there 3 days before I heard about it. A complimentary bottle of water in each room for guests would be an inexpensive good thing.
We stayed here recently and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience from start to finish. When we arrived into our room, we were greeted by an unflushed poo in the toilet — not exactly the welcome you’d hope for at the start of a holiday. We reported it to the night porter, who was helpful and came up straight away to clean it. He advised us to let reception know in the morning. When we did, we spoke to who we believe is the owner. Rather than taking responsibility or offering a genuine apology, he became defensive and sarcastic, giving us an insincere “apology” and even trying to argue with us about the whole situation — as if we were in the wrong for bringing it up. No effort was made to make things right or show any level of hospitality. Breakfast was the same every day, and the quality was poor — the scrambled eggs were totally overcooked and honestly could have been made better by a five-year-old. As for dinner, you had to pre-select your meal during breakfast, which felt very restrictive. After two very disappointing dinners, we didn’t go back for the rest of the stay. On a positive note, there were a few staff members who were genuinely lovely — a gentleman in the bar, two women at reception, and another woman serving breakfast and dinner. All were pleasant, helpful, and doing their best despite clearly working long hours and under a lot of pressure. We even witnessed the owner arguing with staff in front of guests, which only added to the uncomfortable atmosphere. We had really looked forward to our stay, but unfortunately the poor hygiene, bad food, tense environment, and completely unprofessional handling of our complaint made this a place we would not return to or recommend.
