Hotel Sonia Otaru

Best hotel breakfast!! The Hotel breakfast selection is mostly Japanese option with western items like scrambled eggs/sausages/beautiful bread options (croissant/danish/sweet-bread/slices). Best items: Coffee - best coffee on our 10-day trip, and they offer togo-cup Milk - Yamanaka milk - best milk even if compared to other hokkaido milk Butter Potato - best potato than izakaya Chawan tofu - this dish has it own station :) Worth trying: Black Vinegar drink served in Juice area Of course, the room is very clean, and come with Canal view - seating by the coffee table and people watching is very cool. Onsen access and serving Misuzu coffee in the onsen lounge. Location is great, right at Otaru Canal, 1 block away from foodie alley - Denuki Alley (出抜き小路). Easy taxi access as they wait around the corner near Sonia. Last but not least, 2 sets of Washer/Dryer for your laundry need. Hope this helps - and enjoy your trip in Otaru!

Very nice location. Very clean hotel with free coffee and tea at the entrance (to make in the room) we came with 2 kids. So we took the big room and no regret. Very spacious, bathroom clean, might be humid in but you have air cleaner so all good. For the breakfast, no need to book so very helpful if you make your skedule at the last moment. It looks very nice but for 2.400¥ per person we decided to eat outside. Onsen open until midnight so good. Checkout at 11am when usually it's 10am. So we didn't felt the rush of the checkout specially with kids we need more time. We really enjoyed our stay so we recommended this hotel. Nice staff, house keeping perfect. Point to improve: We were 4 with 2 kids, many luggages, we would appreciate some help from staff to bring all to the room. (Probably no available staff when we arrived to help us) Maybe provide bigger trash box when family with 2 young kids

During our recent stay at Hotel Sonia Otaru in April 2025, we had a deeply frustrating experience that left us feeling disappointed and exhausted. We arrived excited for a family getaway with my husband and kids, but from the start, things went wrong. Despite paying extra for room upgrades, we found ourselves in a cramped and outdated room that didn’t meet our expectations or the description provided when we booked. The room was supposed to have more space and amenities, but it was small, with poorly maintained furniture and a lack of essential features like sufficient heating. Even after requesting a better arrangement, we were told the hotel was fully booked and could do nothing to address our concerns. The issues with the room didn’t end there. We had to deal with malfunctioning air conditioning that made it uncomfortably hot at night, which affected our sleep quality. The staff seemed indifferent to our complaints, and their attempts to offer solutions were either delayed or inadequate. There was also a language barrier, making communication difficult and adding to our frustration. The hotel's location was not ideal either. It was far from popular attractions, and we had to rely on taxis for everything, which added extra costs. Dining was another letdown – the food was bland and overpriced, especially considering the limited options for families with children. Overall, the whole experience felt like a series of disappointments, with the hotel failing to deliver on its promises despite us paying extra for upgrades. We left feeling that Hotel Sonia Otaru did not offer good value for money and would not recommend it for families looking for an stress-free, enjoyable stay.
