Hôtel Le Fer à Cheval

A beautiful traditional hotel built in wood, with great service from front desk, restaurant staff and Laurent in the bar. We were here in the summer (August 2021) for 3 nights to relax and go for some walks, but I think the hotel would be a perfect place for a winter stay with its cosy and ample inside public areas. A note on Megeve in the summer: it is a fairly busy place, with lovely alpine/chalet architecture. There is plenty to do in the area (walking, golf, tennis, swimming, biking). The outdoor pool is decent, but the sundeck does lose the sun due to buildings and trees mid/late afternoon. The indoor pool area is very nice, and I can imagine very popular in winter. We had a pool/mountain view room (south facing). It was a classic room with a lovely terrace. A bit small perhaps if you have a lot of luggage (so if your budget allows, go one step up). The rooms are very well insulated and get a bit hot in the summer (no air con), so we opened the shutters that the staff close at night and let the mountain air keep us cool at night. There was no issue with angry mosquitos visiting. The breakfast buffet was about what you would expect for a mountain hotel of this class. We ate in their restaurant twice, and it was very good food, fairly complicated / French cuisine. When the weather is good, you should probably book to be guaranteed seating on the terrace.

We stayed here now the second time and this time it’s just not a five star hotel. In the afternoon you can’t order ice cream or food at the pool because the whole kitchen is closed. After some rain they haven’t reopened the pool area even after asking twice and the sun has been out for ages plus the breakfast buffet is very basic. The rooms are pretty but could do with a renovation….

I expected it to be much more Cleaner and the customer service is not that good the first time I entered the room there was a big yellow stain on the duvet. The room was not clean and there was a smell of something burning coming from outside. Overall, I did not like the experience for the price that I paid.
