Kyoto Machiya Fukune

Our best stay in Japan so far. Check in was simple, the tea ceremony was lovely and our whole stay was peaceful. We had been walking 20k plus steps a day at this point so it was perfect to have a few days to sit, relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. Such a comfortable, beautiful spot. The outside bath is simply the best thing ever. Left feeling relaxed but sad we didn't book to stay longer. Very much will book again! Thank you for a memorable, unique stay!

We stayed one night at Kyoto Machiya Fukune and it was positively magical! We stayed in the “Biwa” unit, which was spotless, with a perfect mix of modern and traditional design. We absolutely adored the two baths: the stone garden bath and the indoor wood bath. That shower was amazing as well. Beds were comfortable and amenities provided were luxurious. We especially enjoyed the shared washer/dryer which we took full advantage of. We also booked the half board meals so we got a kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast. Both were delicious and delivered right to our unit. What a delightful experience. One thing that particularly stood out was the service from staff. Kiyo was so welcoming with the check in process, and the mini matcha demonstration was just what we needed after a travel day! My travel mate had lost an item in the bathroom and when we emailed after checkout, the staff were so diligent in looking for the item and ensuring that we received it. They truly went above and beyond and we are so grateful for that. One more thing I would note is that I booked through Expedia and the booking says that they’ll send and email with check in instructions (there’s no front desk). I didn’t get an email but the check in instructions are easily found on the website and very clearly indicated onsite. I recently stayed at this accommodation and I really enjoyed experiencing a Machiya while in Kyoto. The welcome staff was very kind I wish I had asked him for his name but he was an older Gentleman. He even taught us how to prepare traditional matcha which was awesome. Everyone we interacted with was very pleasant and friendly including the cleaners & meal attendants. The only downside was that for spending almost $700 a night I just truly don’t think it was worth the high price point. The heater was kept on but we had a hard time getting the entire home warm which was to be expected with such an older property. Our disappointments were mostly because we booked this luxury experience solely for the private onsens- the one outside never kept a hot enough temperature after running multiple baths. The inside tub was filled with what looked like to be mold so we were turned off and didn’t use this. Overall our ratings for the staff are extremely high I just don’t think for the price we paid $2500+ for 4 nights that we got a true feel for “luxury”.
