I’ve stayed here several times now and I always enjoy the laid back, comfortable feel of this place. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the restaurants on site are excellent. Located just under an hour’s drive from Calais, it’s a great stop off place whether you’re heading south into France or heading north to the UK.
Very nice hotel in extensive grounds. It is very French rather than hotel chain, if that's your thing you will love it. 3 restaurants to choose from, I ate in the Robert II and it was fine French dining. After dinner I ordered 2 x cognac at the bar without asking the price, it was 40 euro a shot which was a surprise. Not sure if that tells you more about me or about La Chartreuse! Excellent experience overall and highly recommended.
I really wish I could give this 5 stars, however a member of staff made a mistake by giving us the wrong information before we placed our booking. My boyfriend is in a wheelchair, we travel a lot and stay in various hotels but we have a robust process that has never failed us in the past - we will always call a hotel to specify our accessibility needs and discuss which room tier / type they have available before we book online. Then on the booking form, we will always specify please ensure it's a wheelchair accessible room with a wheelchair accessible bathroom. In this case, I called the hotel twice several days ahead of booking and was told by the lady on the phone that a traditional room and luxury room were the two rooms that were wheelchair friendly and she would be able to allocate us on the ground floor. It was our last night of our lovely two weeks holiday travelling across France and we wanted to make it extra special so we opted to book for the Luxury room (3rd best one out of 4 tiers). On arrival, we were happy to see the beautiful hotel grounds after 4 hours in the car and we were very much looking forward to getting on with our evening to make the most of our time there. The luxury room 23 we were given was gorgeous, so opulent and beautifully decorated. However...the bathroom was in no way accessible - the toilet was tucked around a narrow corner at the back of the bathroom and my boyfriend would never be able to access it as he's unable to walk at all. This was a massive oversight by the hotel and we were very disappointed. Steven at the reception desk was a big help and did the best he could given the situation. The only other option other than getting back into the car and driving elsewhere was that we could have room 110, a Privilege room that apparently had an accessible bathroom (when we spoke to the lady earlier in the week on the phone, we weren't told there was a lift in the building so we could have stayed on any floor and we could of perhaps avoided this situation by being allocated a suitable room elsewhere). However, it was one tier down from the luxury room. The room was tired, had a strange musty smell, the windows were very stiff to open, no air-con (but a noisy fan was provided) and there was no accessible shower (he can't use a bath tub because of his disability). The only saving grace was my boyfriend was afforded the luxury of being able to reach the toilet. We had no choice but to say yes to taking the down-graded room and we were keen to get on with the final part of our vacation. Steven said we would need to speak to the hotel manager in the morning to discuss compensation for this error, so we await the outcome. We hope it's a cooperative discussion that doesn't spoil the end of our trip or leave us with a bad taste as we would like to stay here in future if we can trust the room booking is correct
