Stayed at the Matilda Boutique for two nights prior to a Ha Long Bay Cruise. The rooms were big, clean and comfortable. The location is amazing everything is so close, very good for first timers to Hanoi. What made our stay amazing was Daniel, two days after we checked out we arrived back in Old Quarter with our flight not til 2am, we asked if we could store our bags at the hotel. Daniel was so hospitable and welcoming and it was much appreciated. We would 100% recommend this hotel to anybody wanting to stay in the Old Quarter. Thankyou to the staff for being so friendly and helpful!
We stayed in a room with a balcony and loved how spacious both the bedroom and bathroom were. The bed was comfortable, and everything was spotlessly clean. The large windows overlooking the street added a nice touch. I especially appreciated the high quality big hair dryer. definitely a must for a girl like me! The hotel is in a busy area, very close to the main night market, so it can be a bit noisy at night. The staff were generally friendly and helpful, though one receptionist seemed new and needed more training. For safety reasons, he forgot to take a copy of our passports, and we nearly missed our transport because he didn’t inform the driver who came that we had been waiting for an hour. Breakfast was great, with a good variety of food and delicious coffee. Overall, we were happy with our stay!
Pros: Strategic location. Cold AC in the room. Spacious room and bathroom. Fragrant shampoo, body wash, and hand wash. Daniel, the friendly and attentive receptionist. Cons: The room still had strands of hair and dust everywhere upon check-in. One of the five rooms we booked had a broken bathroom door. They said someone would come up to repair it, but no one ever did. Some food service staff were rude and discriminatory. We observed them treating Western/European guests pleasantly, while being noticeably rude to Asian and Indian guests. After reading other reviews, it seems our experience is not unique — several guests have noted the same. These staff members need retraining in customer service and basic respect. Speaking to guests in a hostile manner is unacceptable. Unfortunately, these were the staff assigned during breakfast. They made us feel unwelcome. For the remainder of our 5-day stay, we chose to skip the free breakfast entirely, as it wasn’t worth starting our mornings on a bad note. The only redeeming quality of our stay was Daniel at the reception. He was kind, helpful, and communicated well in English. Mike, the manager, was also courteous and apologized on behalf of the staff. That said, we will not stay here again, nor would we recommend this place to anyone. If you’re on a budget and still choose to book, just avoid the free breakfast entirely and you might be fine. Book at your own risk.
