I nearly didn’t stay at this hotel because of the bad reviews. My stay was excellent, the reception was helpful and very friendly, very efficient, no fuss and no questions. Room was spacious, clean and relaxing! The spa facilities although dated are great. We really enjoyed the swimming pool, the sauna was hot, steam room relaxing and the jacuzzi working. It lacks a little maintenance, all the same we and all the other guests really enjoyed being there. Don’t be put off by the negative fussy reviews!
This is a quintessential example of a British golf hotel. The staff are friendly and the hotel has all the traditional feels (the room decor was conservative and a little old but I actually like that style) but it is modern enough to serve all your needs. I stayed for one night and played golf the next morning. I had a dinner and breakfast deal. Both meals were delicious and plentiful. The breakfast was particularly bountiful. The golf shop was good with extremely friendly and helpful staff. Finally the golf course was superb. An interesting course within the rolling hills of Hampshire with a couple of really excellent signature holes. Highly recommended for a great value but good quality golf break.
Regrettably, I can say without hesitation that this was the worst hotel experience I have encountered in my 45 years of travel. The stay was marred by unprofessional service, poor maintenance, and a complete disregard for basic customer care. I was shocked by the substandard conditions and appalled by the overall management of the property. Summary of Key Issues: 1. Facilities & Room Condition No power sockets by the bedside—highly inconvenient and far below modern hospitality standards. No toilet brush provided in the bathroom—basic hygiene neglected. No air-conditioning or ventilation system; windows restricted to 2–3 inches of opening, making the room hot and uncomfortable in warm weather. Rust in the bathtub and cobwebs on the windows—clear signs of poor upkeep and lack of cleanliness. Vending machines accepted cash only—a surprising and outdated limitation. 2. Staffing & Guest Service Only one receptionist handling check-ins for a 113-room hotel during peak season—resulting in long queues and unnecessary delays. The hotel appeared chronically understaffed. Employees were visibly stressed and overwhelmed, which affected both service quality and guest experience. A £5 daily fee to access gym facilities, which should be included in the room rate, especially at a hotel claiming a four-star rating. No room service offered unless staying more than 5 nights—a bizarre and unacceptable policy that contradicts industry norms. 3. Restaurant Experience & Serious Concerns The restaurant displayed an 18+ movie with full sound on large TV screens in a family dining area where small children were present. This is wholly inappropriate and likely in breach of licensing or safeguarding regulations. I will be reporting this matter to the local licensing authority and the county council. The restaurant manager, Albert, was openly dismissive and unprofessional in his interactions: I was handed a menu at 7:30 PM while waiting for my daughter. She arrived at 9:00 PM, and I attempted to place our order at 9:05 PM. Albert refused, citing a 9:00 PM cut-off, despite failing to inform me of this at any time between 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM. Only after firm insistence did he reluctantly take our order. His tone, behaviour, and approach were not only unhelpful but hostile, entirely unsuited for someone in a management role in a hospitality setting. 4. General Observations The bar was understocked—not what one would expect from a hotel within a golf resort. Staff morale appeared low and overall guest service was poor. The atmosphere of the hotel was far from welcoming or professional. Conclusion Rather than creating a memorable and enjoyable experience for my daughter and me, this stay was deeply disappointing. The hotel felt neglected, poorly managed, and devoid of any meaningful customer service. I would go so far as to say that the Meon Valley Hotel, Golf & Country Club is currently unfit to operate as a 4-star establishment, and in its present state, risks damaging the reputation of the wider brand or group it represents. Unless serious improvements are made, I believe this property should be temporarily closed for a complete operational and service review.
