The Meryan House Hotel was warm, clean, quiet, friendly and nicely furnished, with a traditional feel. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. The usual English breakfast was nicely prepared. This hotel is highly recommended. Do be sure to make the booking direct by telephone so all the money goes to the hotel itself rather than intermediaries.
This is such a lovely place if you are looking for a contrast from the soulless chain hotels. Meryan House is quirky, eclectic, simply charming. My dog had to stay overnight at a veterinary hospital a few miles away. I looked up local hotels and immediately liked the look of Meryan. My friend and I drove there, spoke to Cherie, the lovely owner, and luckily they had two available rooms. I totally recommend this pretty place. Cherie’s husband, Nick, is a fascinating raconteur and we enjoyed his chat very much. Lovely breakfasts, pretty rooms, peace and quiet. Just what you want.
I'd phoned in advance to check there was secure bicycle storage. Long story short: there wasn't. I was told I was silly for explaining that it was important, and invited to go and find myself another hotel. Then I was lectured about having the temerity not to book direct, and when I explained that the rate had been cheaper through an intermediary, I was told this was untrue and I couldn't possibly have checked. Bizarre, unnecessary, and downright rude. I was then told I would have had a better room if I'd called them instead of using a booking platform. Lastly, I was instructed to leave my room key in the insecure hallway on a board whenever I left the premises. Apart from the shocking welcome, the hotel was frayed but passable; remote from amenities, with an acceptable English breakfast in the morning. Cheap, and felt it. I definitely would not recommend, to cyclists, or other humans.
