If you're an American looking to experience authentic Japan, Naraya Ryokan in Kusatsu is pure magic. From the moment I checked in, I felt like I’d stepped into a dream—wooden architecture, tatami rooms, and the calming smell of hinoki (Japanese cypress) everywhere. The onsen here? Next level. It’s fed from the famous Yubatake, and soaking in those hot spring waters under the stars was hands-down one of the most peaceful moments of my life. Dinner was a beautiful kaiseki meal—like edible art. I had dishes I couldn’t pronounce, but every bite was incredible. The staff were kind, patient, and genuinely warm, even with my limited Japanese. Naraya isn’t just a hotel—it’s an experience. Traditional, soulful, and 100% unforgettable. If you're in Japan, make the trip to Kusatsu. You’ll thank yourself.
I chose this ryokan after seeing a YouTube video. Did some extra research and made our reservations for a 3-night stay in the room named Kiri. Upon arrival, the staff greeted us and took care of everything, including getting our bags to the room while we were checking in and given an orientation tour. We booked breakfast and dinner with our room, which includes a private dining room for each meal. The meals were outstanding, and my wife was very happy with the quality of the food and the presentations. See the pictures. This ryokan has three private onsens that you can reserve for 45-minute sessions. The cost during our stay was ¥3,300 per session. There are also two public onsens for men & women. They rotate the genders approximately every 12 hours. One side has four baths, including a 1-person carved wood bath, which was a nice experience. This ryokan is also located a few short steps away from the Yubatake. This was definitely a great experience that you should try.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, room was beautiful and spacious (we chose the Japanese style tatami room) the meals were well thought out incorporating cherry blossom theme and the onsen was just divine. I would love to come back and stay for longer next time!
