We stayed for a long weekend which included a function at the Hotel. The staff were amazingly helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The food throughout the stay was top class. We had food from the various menus during our stay including the function/private party menu, the hotel restaurant menu, the bar menu and the full cooked breakfast. Everything was really tasty. The location of the hotel was great, being just a short walk into the town, but unlike most places in Matlock Bath this hotel had plenty of parking for residents (parking in the town, or even driving into town over the bank holiday weekend looked like a nightmare). We used the Spa, which was fine (not the best spa you'll ever use but I doubt you'd book this place just for a spa break). We didn't use the outdoor pool which I think is for season outdoor swimmers as by most people's standards it is very cold (19 degrees). The hotel is literally hundreds of years old and full of character, but with that comes old features and not always the clean clinical lines of brand new hotel chains. The upkeep of this place must be very expensive too, which is probably why there are small areas of repair required (cracked plaster work etc), but nothing too drastic. Overall we had a great stay which was perfect for us. The big pluses for this hotel were the food, the staff and the parking (boring I know but essential for most people).
This is just a review of the room, food, and the service we experienced. The junior suite was spacious, clean and suited our needs. The bedding was spotless, although someone had spilled tea down the divan bed so it looked unsightly. The decor is plain but light, with occasional marks, doubtless from exuberant children's feet. The bathroom was also very clean, light and everything worked properly. The staff were friendly and polite, if evidently covering a lot of the area, but they managed. Sunday dinner was good enough, if not superb. Maybe a little over priced for what it was but it was tasty and filling. We slept well, as our room was nice and quiet. Breakfast was a buffet but everything was good, although they'd run out of eggs when I arrived. It's good for a stop over for the area.
We went here on a very very hot day to use their outdoor swimming pool. Lovely people and great surroundings. The pool is very cold as it is spring water and it goes a bit green in some places but other than that it's a fab place. I also treated myself to some food and drinks at the bar which I thought was very good value for money .
