Nishiki No Yu Jimotoya

You would never guess this is a bookstore! This place is truly one of the most unique and hidden gems I’ve come across. It’s actually a former public bathhouse (sento) that has been beautifully transformed into a bookstore — and yet, it still retains much of its original charm and atmosphere. From the tiled floors to the high ceilings and vintage fixtures, everything about the space feels nostalgic and artistic at the same time. It’s incredibly photogenic — definitely an “Instagrammable” spot — and a perfect place to explore if you’re looking for something off the beaten path. The selection of books is thoughtfully curated, and there’s even a small seating area where you can sit and read while soaking in the ambiance. This is not just a place to buy books — it’s an experience. Highly recommended for book lovers, photographers, and anyone who appreciates creative reuse of old architecture.

We’ve been on several trips to Japan. This is one of our favorite hotels - boutique, lux, and a very crafted experience. We were welcomed with a drink and snack, then transported to the main hotel building. The hotel had the most incredible library / bookstore with a beautifully curated display. Our room was a suite with a private onsen. The design of the room is stunning with exposed concrete with great touches like robes made with colorful fabric. There are free snacks and drinks - even ice cream! Dinner was very special - each dish was made with local ingredients and its story was shared when it was served. Food is for a more experienced palate - not for kids. The onsen for the hotel was also very special. The shop and bakery had great stuff. The donuts from Alpine bakery were out of this world!!!

Stylish hotel and a stylish room with a nice private onsen outside on the balcony. Welcoming staff. Excellent dinner (just the meat course was not that good because the meat was too long grilled). We needed some time to find the car parking.
