No. 81 Tower Street

This is a lovely hotel in the perfect location. The staff were really friendly and we enjoyed our stay there, mostly being out and about anyway. The room we had was in what I would call the garden wing and our request for twin beds was honoured which was a big plus. It had a reasonable size and a nice bathroom with ample natural lighting from the big windows. On the day we arrived it was quite hot and we were glad to find a tower fan in our room that we placed on the desk for best ventilation results. (There is no air conditioning but normally you don’t need that in the British climate. There was a radiator but of course we didn’t need that.) The blinds in the bathroom and the insulation curtains in the bedroom did a good job at keeping the morning sun at bay. Our room was facing the car park but there was never too much noise from that side, even with the windows open overnight. The pigeons were active in the early morning so we simply closed the windows then, problem solved. (The only real noise we heard one morning was some workmen discussing a bathroom plumbing problem with a room further down and they kept banging the doors for a short while.) We didn’t have breakfast but I sat out in the garden one morning with an espresso from the bar, enjoying the sun. Years ago I was in this hotel having afternoon tea with a friend, that was also a great experience. I’m already looking forward to coming back here for our next visit to Winchester but that might be some years down the line.

We came here for the Sunday Roast to celebrate our 34th Wedding Anniversary and we were not disappointed. The food and service are superb. We had the roast chicken with possibly the best roast potatoes known to man! The roast was wonderful with just the right amount of meat and vegetables with a light gravy. Our experience was enhanced by the amazing service, particularly from Jane who really went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. This hotel, restaurant and garden are a small haven in the busy City of Winchester and we highly recommend. We will definitely be returning.

We loved our stay at the Winchester Royal Hotel in June 2025. Our room was spacious and comfortable, check-in was easy and the price was fantastic! We chose to add breakfast and that was a very nice buffet overlooking their garden. It was our first time to Winchester and we only stayed one night but we regret not staying longer.
