The property is in a beautiful location. The service we received was excellent and Antonio may be the best customer service person I have ever dealt with. He was great. The rooms are a little dated but they are fine. The only issue we had for the trip was being charged a laundry fee when we were told it was included with our premium upgrade. I would highly recommend this property if you are looking to getaway and have a good time.
Customer service would confirm that they were going to do something and would not. I reserved a restaurant twice that they lost. No towels in room even after cleaning. Asked for soda instead of beer for room refrigerator but no luck. Beach is decent with good snorkeling. We saw large greenback turtles and spotted eagle rays. Lots of schooling fish. Need to be careful and stay away from rocks and shallows on your way out and back due to urchins and sharp rocks. Not close to town or other services. Bring a personal fan as no places except for your room and gift shop are air conditioned. There is a shuttle that will take you around the property which can become necessary as some buildings are far away and up steep hills. If you want to do activities on the resort, use bug spray as remote spots off the path have lots of mosquitos. Not a great location if you want to go to the rain forest as that is over an hour away. Food is not great but not horrible. You do not need salt as you will sweat into your food.
Disappointing Stay at Occidental Papagayo I recently stayed at the Occidental Papagayo in Costa Rica, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience from start to finish. As much as I was looking forward to a relaxing vacation, the reality was far from the idyllic getaway I had imagined. The food at the resort was shockingly bad. It lacked flavor and variety, making dining a chore rather than a pleasure. One would expect an all-inclusive resort to provide a range of delicious options, but this was not the case. The buffet and restaurant meals were consistently tasteless, leaving much to be desired. Another major letdown was the absence of 24-hour room service. In a place that markets itself as an all-inclusive haven, not being able to order food or drinks at any time was incredibly inconvenient. Furthermore, I found the need to call the receptionist multiple times for assistance frustrating, as help was not readily available. The staff in the restaurant and buffet seemed unapproachable and unfriendly. Their lack of warmth and hospitality was palpable and certainly did not enhance the experience. It felt as though they were doing the bare minimum, and their attitude contributed to an overall unwelcoming atmosphere. The so-called "premium" service was hardly worth the upgrade. With only one premium bar available, the selection of premium liquors was limited and confined to that specific location. Moreover, there was hardly any noticeable difference between the deluxe and premium services, making the latter a poor investment. Despite voicing my concerns to the manager, who was available for a conversation, nothing was done to address the issues. It was disheartening to see that even after raising these matters, no tangible changes were made to improve the experience. We had other concerns that we addressed that fell on deaf ears: --Employees were upset when we asked for extra soda and water (it is an all-inclusive resort, we should have as many beverages as we want) --We were given bacon multiple times in our club sandwich even though we said we can't eat pork --There was a water leak in our “Premium” room --We received raw chicken wings --The “Master Suite,” which is the highest level of Premium Suites, is unavailable to book online and can be booked in person (which we never knew about). It includes the jacuzzi, personal golf cart, and smart TV, but this experience is advertised for the Premium Suites. Overall, my stay at Occidental Papagayo was regrettably terrible. I hope this review serves as a warning to other potential guests about the level of poor service and lackluster accommodations. Save yourself the disappointment and choose another destination for your Costa Rican getaway. Also, I am aware that the manager/PR representative provides a generic response to these concerns, promising that our next visit will be different with better service but we wouldn't even want to return if the stay is free.
