We enjoyed doing Tye Die shirts with Moses, Aqua Aerobics with John at pool area and playing volleyball in the pool. Food at El Charro very good and Gaby was fantastic waitress. Husband thought bed was a little hard and it is 45 minutes drive from airport. Wings at Sports Bar Way Too Spicy! Get sauce on side. Did not get to enjoy beach because of seaweed and red flag; a little disappointed. Massages at Spa were fantastic and very relaxing. Enjoyed cold jacuzzi as hot one was very hot. Overall, staff were friendly, cheerful, helpful and welcoming.
My husband and I recently returned from our honeymoon at OMR. We can’t say enough to describe how much of a positive experience we had. Check in and checkout was the smoothest and fastest experience I’ve had at any resort/ hotel. We can’t rave enough about how extremely delicious all of the food was that we ate. Every restaurant, even the buffet which buffets are usually mid, it was such excellent food. The service from every single worker we encountered was top notch everyone was very kind and attentive. Our butler Alfredo tended to our every question and need all week and was very sweet and a great employee. He made our stay more than enjoyable and would request his service again if we return! Some other workers we very much enjoyed talking to daily were margarita at the excursion booth and Gabriella the photographer. The resort is very laid back and quiet, especially during the day when you need a break/nap from the heat. We would love to return here again. The service from everyone was impeccable and I could go on and on raving about how incredible our week was!
I recently stayed at Ocean Maya Royale in Playa del Carmen, and while the resort itself is beautiful and many aspects of our stay were enjoyable, I left with mixed feelings due to the way guests were treated differently based on appearance and language. From the start, it was noticeable that “white” or foreign-looking guests received significantly more attention than Hispanic-looking guests like myself. The difference was hard to ignore and disappointing, especially in a place I expected to feel welcomed as someone whose parents grew up here. The most negative experience was at the sports bar. My husband and I were practically ignored by the servers. When we asked for milkshakes, we were told they were completely out. Minutes later, an Asian-looking couple walked in, and the servers rushed to help them. Not only did they take their order immediately, but shortly after, the server walked past us and said, “We do have milkshakes—we only have chocolate or strawberry.” My husband ordered one, but then we noticed the couple received both a chocolate and a strawberry shake. To make matters worse, my husband asked for water several times (at least 3–4), and our table continued to be ignored while the foreign guests were given full attention. This behavior wasn’t limited to one spot. Across the resort, we noticed that if you don’t speak English, the experience changes drastically. Once my husband and I began speaking English, the difference in service was undeniable. While not every server was this way, I would say at least 90% of them were noticeably more attentive to foreigners. It left a bad taste in my mouth, because every guest has paid for the same experience and should be treated with equal respect. Even during checkout, I witnessed the front desk staff bringing drinks and shots to English-speaking guests while ignoring Spanish-speaking ones. That was unacceptable and left me feeling like we were second-class guests in our own culture’s land. That being said, I do want to give a huge shoutout to Cesar at the hibachi restaurant. He completely turned our night around. Cesar was kind, engaging, and made us feel welcomed and included. He shared stories, created a fun atmosphere, and made the experience memorable. My husband was so pleased that we went back to hibachi twice during our 4-night stay—thanks to him. Overall, Ocean Maya Royale has a lot of potential and some great staff members like Cesar who truly care about guests. But the resort desperately needs to address the clear bias in how guests are treated based on appearance and language. Respect, attention, and hospitality should never be selective.
