I stayed here for two nights. This minshuku definitely has that wonderful traditional feel that, I think, most tourists want to experience. The hosts are incredibly warm, and while there is a language barrier, we understood each other alright. The private onsen is great, especially after a day of hiking and walking around. I recommend availing of the breakfast for an additional 1,000 yen. It is so worth it.
This was the perfect place to try a ryokan-like experience. I'm not certain if it's a traditional ryokan, but we slept on futon in tatami mat rooms with sliding doors. There are two onsen that can be locked for privacy since they are shared with the rest of the rooms. Couples/families are encouraged to bathe together to be considerate on the other guests waiting to bathe. Each room has a heat/AC unit, and very warm comforters (we stayed in mid November, and it was cold outside!). There are some rules: onsen bathing rooms and exterior doors close/lock at 10pm, and they take your room key each time you leave the premises. I also believe you cannot enter the premises between 10am and 3pm. There are communal sinks in the hallways (near the toilets) to wash your face and brush your teeth. The owners are very kind and generous. They bring coffee to your room around 7:30am, and provide tea or hot water in the afternoons. Great little place! So glad we stayed. We visited Shirakawa-go, and used Oyado Yoshinoya as our home base for two nights.
Great option for a few nights in Takayama. The location is outstanding, right in the middle of the city just next to the old quarters. The place is run by a lovely old couple and everything is spotless clean. The rooms are all traditional Japanese style with shared toilets and bathrooms. There are two private shower rooms with onsen baths. The beds are on the floor on the tatami mat. Prices are reasonable. Overall a nice experience if you are looking for an authentic Japanese accommodation experience.
