Palazzo Piccolomini

This hotel is a gem! Such an interesting property! Orvieto was one of our favorite stops in Italy. The hotel is very clean, and everyone working there was extremely helpful and friendly. The breakfast had a great variety of pastries, eggs, and meats, and excellent coffee. There is a little bit of street noise, but this is completely understandable given that it’s in a medieval city. (We use a white noise app on our phone to help with this!) I wonder if some of the less favorable reviews have been written by people who are used to staying in chain hotels in cities, but anyone who appreciates a beautiful small town will appreciate this unique and special property.

This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful town with incredibly helpful staff. The rooms are comfortable and have good amenities. Shower is great. Happily got us an iron etc. Taxis are hard to come by but beware the private transfer that the hotel may order you, it was €25 for a less than 10 minute journey to the station. €35-40 per 15 minute journey to a vineyard each way. It felt like extortion. This was the only sour note in our trip.

As in other reviews, rooms are basic, simple. Safe and mini fridge. Dark wood, cream walls. Basic clean compact bath. Firm bed. Nice bed cover. Stayed in room 309. Overlooked the small Piazza Ranieri but was not noisy. Used lift and then a few stairs to get to room. Very pleasant host. Nice Breakfast with lots of pastries and eggs. Easy 10 min walk to Basilica. Chapel was beautiful. ***hotel only a few feet from the escalator to the large parking lot outside the walls***. Wish we had known that so as not to have to enter ZTL zone. However, should be able to enter and exit to hotel without passing a ZTL camera as per internet info.
