Review for Playa Canek Beachfront Eco Hotel – Penthouse Stay We recently stayed in the penthouse for 4 people at Playa Canek Beachfront Eco Hotel. The location is absolutely fantastic — right on the beach with private access, which made it feel peaceful and exclusive. There’s definitely a lot of space in the penthouse, and it could comfortably fit 4–5 people. The rustic wooden structure gives it a unique, cabin-like vibe, though it’s clearly an older building and could use some renovation. When we first entered, there was a bit of a musty smell — perhaps from humidity or age — which could be improved with some updates. One thing to be aware of: the air conditioning is turned off from 8am to 8pm, which made the daytime heat pretty intense. Also, the water has a slight salty taste, likely due to local filtration. It’s okay, but noticeable. Internet and phone signal were spotty during our stay, which might be a concern if you're planning to work remotely or stay connected. At around $153 per night, we felt the price was a bit high for the condition of the accommodation — it felt more like a beach cabin than a luxury stay. Still, the beachfront location, friendly staff, and overall vibe of the area added a lot of value. We didn’t get a chance to try the breakfast, which starts at 8am, but it’s a nice option to have on-site. Thanks to the team for their hospitality — with a few updates and better climate control, this place could be truly amazing.
To the management I like it And I do recommend it Great customer service Everyone is very polite and helpful The breakfast is perfect Only few things you need to fix the rooms The bed are too hard And I was expecting a little fridge in the room I have to throw away my medicine cause it need to be in a cold temperature, So I didn’t take my asthma medicine and pain medicine inhaler. Am I medication for my lungs So my little recommendation is to get a fridge, a small tiny one and also to get a fans because the AC starts from eight at night to eight in the morning,, The other one is just it’s perfect. It goes straight to the beach. Wouldn’t go to the beach because there was a lot of Sargasso. But that’s not the hotels issue at all is nature But I do recommend it. It’s a nice place. It’s quite perfect and I like it so it’s only if you recommendations for the management to hopefully they take care of it
PLEASE DON'T STAY HERE!!! My boyfriend and I booked Playa Canek for 4 nights online and we had an absolutely awful experience. We arrive at the hotel (they knew when we were coming, we had been communicating with them via WhatsApp) and there's no one at the front desk. We're waiting around for about 15 minutes when finally someone walks by and goes to get someone else to help us. The front desk person has on a shirt for a scooter rental next door so it's unclear whether he's even officially associated with this hotel. He is not very welcoming and immediately starts selling us on different things. He says it will be only 300p extra for our entire stay to move to a beach-front room, we are tired and this isn't very expensive so we warily agree. Then he says it will only be a little bit extra for breakfast. We say we can find breakfast elsewhere and he tries to make us feel stupid for not taking their breakfast because he says it is a very good deal. Finally he takes us to our room and it is TINY. It's on the second floor, facing the ocean. It has a full-size bed (we had paid for a king) and the bathroom smells very moldy. Our window is looking out to an empty lot next door which is filled with trash. The music by the beach is BLARING and we don't want to close our windows because the AC in the room doesn't turn on until 8pm at night so we would be stifling inside with the windows closed. We go to the manager and ask why our bed is so small when we paid for a room with a king-size bed. He explains to us that we decided to "upgrade" to the beachfront room which has a full-size bed, not a king. We were LITERALLY in the room for all of 15 minutes. We ask if we could get a refund for the hotel because we've looked online and we would like to stay somewhere else nearby. He says they absolutely do not give refunds. We ended up leaving so that we could try and get the charge cancelled by our credit card company. We ended up staying a 10 minute walk down the road at Dos Ceibas, which is CHEAPER and SO MUCH NICER!!!!!! PLEASE AVOID!!!! Or at least ask to see your room BEFORE you agree to pay!!!
