Boutique vinyard experience. Beautifully designed, small, personal and incredible service. A truely intimate Douro experience
Incredible location and views, beautiful swimming pool which is separate to the property through a path within the vineyard. Rooms are lovely, albeit quite smaller than the pictures appeared. Surprised that no one else has mentioned this in the reviews—there is nowhere to eat other than the hotel (within walking distance). We knew this beforehand and were happy to eat on-site. Noting the reviews were all positive, and having seen the pictures of the perfect outdoor setting, we envisaged a romantic sunset meal in this idyllic location. It goes dark very early at home so we loved maximising the Summer nights with outdoor dining in Portugal and expected this at absolute peak at this hotel with outdoor tables and stunning views MADE for a sunset. When we arrived, we were asked to choose our dinner option and commit to a time we would arrive in the dining room as we were told 'we all like to eat together.' So essentially, you are forced to enter a windowless dining room while it's still light outside to sit on a long dining table, elbow to elbow with other guests. You are, in fact, closer to the other guests than you are to your significant other who is opposite you (but the table is wide, so no private conversations are really possible). I would like to state here that I do accept this is a lovely experience for people who a) like communal dining and/or b) are traveling alone. My issue is that this was not advertised/communicated before booking We traveled here for one night for my partner's birthday, and I had expected, as mentioned, to be able to have a romantic, special meal (bear in mind, it was the most expensive meal of our entire trip in Portugal) outside, watching the sunset. I'm leaving this review to be the first (and only!) person to let others know what to truly expect from this stay. If paying 150 euros for a very average meal + a sparse amount of wine to be pushed on you next to strangers with no other option is something that appeals to you, then this is the right place. But do not come here if you expect to be able to sit outside in one of the idyllic settings in Portugal and watch the sunset over the Douro Valley or want to just be able to eat with your travel partner. I felt that if I had planned a proposal here I’d be extremely disappointed. Our jobs involve making conversation and talking with clients the majority of the time so switching off and having quality time for us is very important, so nothing against the fellow guests. Overall, a beautiful location, but don’t think the food was worth the money at all. Very tough meat and tasteless fish. We went to a neighbouring Quinta that was a third of the price, equally beautiful views with food of superior quality and free flowing wine… Worth noting also that during a late afternoon glass of wine and feeling quite hungry for the standard Portugal offerings of meat and cheese we had become accustomed to, we asked if they had any appetisers/charcuterie/snacks to which they replied no, sorry, not at this time. Which is crazy considering there is nothing else around the area and you’re staying on a vineyard so it’s most likely you have driven….but had a glass or two of wine. We literally had NOTHING to eat and then had to wait until dinner so we’re extremely hungry for a few hours.
