Beautiful, comfortable modern hotel right by the River Wear in the centre of the city. Truly stunning location! Excellent, friendly service; good food (especially breakfast!); spacious, comfortable rooms, with good bathrooms and restful beds. Good fast WiFi, lots of USB charging ports. We had a memorable stay - I'd really recommend this hotel.

The location is great and I had a room overlooking the river, which was a bonus. I attended a conference which was well done on site. I had a very difficult time getting service in the bar. In fact, it took so long that I almost left. The restaurant--I really enjoyed my meals. The breakfasts were great, too, with an excellent selection. The room was ok. It did what I needed it to do and had an excellent shower. However, housekeeping did not pick up a plate or glass. They serviced the room---but ignored those. It was really strange. The carpet also had some obvious stains. It just looked a little tired, which surprised me with how lovely the reception area was. At checkout the gentleman kindly helped me to get a cab and I appreciated his help.

Very honest review for a one night stay charged at £170. Upon arrival, staff were friendly and helpful however we were charged an extra £14 to park our car. We have stayed in many hotels where the hotel doesn’t own the car park but have not been charged when staying overnight. This has now brought our night stay to £184. Room: extremely dated decor. There were numerous holes and stains on the carpet. The fabric on the headboard had worn and was cracked. The room and the bathroom were very small, the bathroom only allowed one person at a time. Facilities provided in the room were limited - no robe or slippers which would be expected at the price paid. Old small kettle with limited tea and coffee options, no biscuits provided which is common for a hotel charging this price. No fridge in the room, no drinks provided, a water fountain was down the corridor. if needed a cold drink you had to walk down the corridor for an ice machine. Air con in the rooms had a dated mechanism so was unable to set the temperature, would have preferred a cooler room. Asked reception for a fan which the hotel did not have. The bed and the pillows were comfortable. Would expect the tv to be a smart tv. We used the bar to buy 2 coffees during the stay, one time we was charged £3.90, the day after we were charged £4.30. Both time we ordered a flat white. Leisure facilities: very small, not enough pool space or seating for guests. The lounge chairs were extremely hard and uncomfortable as they were made of wood which meant we were unable to relax on them. This meant we left the spa area. Breakfast: good selection of tasty food, enjoyed the option to order items off the menu. Overall we have given the stay 2 stars based on the bed and pillows being comfortable and a nice breakfast. To improve the hotel the rooms would need a huge renovation as the price charged is completely unreasonable. We have stayed in many hotels based at this price which are luxurious. We have stayed in Village hotels for £80 per night and the rooms are much larger, better facilities and a much more pleasant experience. Would not stay at this hotel again.
