Stayed for a long weekend, very comfortable room, very clean and tidy. Great location, you can easily walk into York center, there are also nice river walks and parks straight out of the hotel. Complimentary tea, coffee and croissants in the morning was a bonus. Special mention for Mel at front of house, so helpful, and could run the place single handed if she had to.
Lovely room with kitchen and view of the river and dog friendly. Parking next to the hotel is Ringo and £15 for 24hrs. Complimentary coffee/teas and baked goods on a morning. I thought the bed was too hard and the pillows were awful however my husband thought they were good. The tv could have been better, it has no smart options just bog standard channels.
It's taken me a couple of weeks to write this review as I don't want it to sound harsh - the lady who welcomed us on reception was really friendly and so I want to be as objective as possible. The good stuff - not only was the reception lady really friendly, she was really forthcoming telling us about breakfast, the free lockers, location of rooms, toilets, and everything else we may need. There was free croissants and coffee available at the reception area, and the rooms were clean and had decent air-con too. The kitchenette was fine for a long weekend away. The not-so-good-stuff - the free coffee at reception was changeable throughout the day - first thing in the morning tasting like good coffee shop coffee, later on in the day just like weak instant coffee. This was from heated jugs, as the coffee machine was broken, which we were told about. Reception was also really warm, which wouldn't usually have been a problem except that weekend was also exceedingly hot outside, so a cool respite would have been great. The sharp knives in the room's kitchenette were all rusty apart from one, which was less than ideal. There was also a buzzing noise which seemed to come from the box above the wardrobe space - unsure what this was as nothing was visible. It definitely wasn't the fridge, AC, or anything in the bathroom. There was a strange smell in the upstairs corridor, almost a warm yeasty soggy bread smell? It was a hard one to describe, and unsure where it was coming from too. There were 8 coat hangers in the wardrobe, and no drawers, so if you were planning on unpacking your clothing you might have trouble doing so. We kept our clothes in our suitcase, but there wasn't really anywhere to tuck the suitcase either, so it was just on the floor on one side of the room - not ideal! We were at the back of the hotel, opposite side to the river (room 333), and on the Thursday night and Saturday night we both struggled to sleep. Not because of any noise inside the hotel, that was really nice and quiet, but because of the noise outside. I'd guess there's a pub or gig venue nearby, as we could hear every note and drumbeat from each set. I was so glad I remembered to bring my ear plugs, but I could still hear enough to break up my sleep throughout both nights. Thank goodness for a break on Friday night!! Definitely needs some sound baffling or triple glazing here. I didn't mention this to the reception staff, as realistically what could they have done about any of this? It needs to be looked into at a higher level. All in all, I liked the location, it's easy to get into York proper, but because of so many little things and the noise, I wouldn't stay here again.
