Royal Penguin Boutique Hotel & Spa

I am a Canadian that was in Nepal when the pandemic started. While frantically trying to get back to Canada my friend and I needed a place to stay in Kathmandu. We ended up staying at this hotel for two weeks and I truly don't know what we would've done without them. The staff made us feel safe and cared for during such a stressful time. Also the food is awesome!! Should've written this review 4 years ago!!

It feels like the hotel once offered a premium stay, but over time, maintenance has been neglected, and it shows. The chair needs repair; the overhead lights and bathtub drainage were not working properly; and amenities such as handwash and shower gel should have been provided. Location-wise, it is in the center of Thamel and by the road, so vehicle and crowd noise are noticeable.

Pros: - Location (neighborhood Thamel is very central) - Room aesthetics (modern feel with cool lighting). Cons: - Wifi didn't work for our stay of 2 days, after multiple conversations with reception. - When checking out they couldn't process credit cards (even though I had specifically asked during check-in). Had to run to the ATM and pay hefty transaction fees. - Bathroom door didn't close, safety locker didn't close, and even front door didn't close reliably. - Foyer light flickered consistently. Overall, the brief stay was riddled with inconveniences. Previously I have stayed in a cheap hostel in Kathmandu that worked better in these respects.
