The hotel is luxury, but just ok. The beds were very nice and the room had much space. Unfortunately the air conditioning was not working and though it was freaking hot in the night. The pool on the top would be cool, but its not really managed, the roof looks like a dump. But I think this is due to very less people during covid times.
You can see that this used to be an amazing place, but now it's clear that they have done no upgrades or maintenance in years. Gross carpet, mirrors losing silver backing, terrible paint job, visible patches all over walls and ceiling, lousy shower heads. Just a mess. Nice staff, feel bad they work in such a yucky place.
CONS: The building is very noisy, and privacy is not a feature. Due to the odd layout of nearly every room, someone passing by in the hallways can look in, even without meaning to. If the windows are covered with the blinds you feel like you're in a cave, but with the blinds open you feel like you're in a fish bowl. The bathtub is so narrow you can't stand with your feet apart, making it hard to keep your balance when you're wet and soapy, but don't try holding the grab bars because they're pulling out of the wall. The Jacuzzi pool was broken down for our entire four-day stay. There were bugs in our first room. The second room was better. The hot water at the breakfast buffet tasted like hose water. Payment is in advance at the time of check-in. So be certain that you want to stay here before paying. Getting a refund is like pulling teeth. PROS: The staff were very nice, from the front desk to the bellhops, the waiters and the housekeepers. There is a lovely view from the roof top terrace / restaurant of the main plaza in Santa Cruz and the surrounding buildings. Fortunately you don't have to be a guest of the hotel to eat at the roof top restaurant.
