For our anniversary, we decided on a getaway to Japan and chose to spend two nights in Nara. Having visited the Kansai region several times, we had always bypassed Nara, deterred by concerns of large crowds due to the deer. This time, being it was the off season, we decided to finally immerse ourselves in what the city had to offer. Despite the widespread advice that Nara is best suited as a day trip, or at most, a one-night stay, we booked a two-night experience at the Shisui Luxury Collection Hotel. Looking back, we’re thrilled we did—and in hindsight, we regret not extending our stay! The hotel is thoughtfully divided into three distinct sections: the main building and the Saryō Zeze Cafe, where Champagne Hour is held, are located on one side, while the guest rooms are situated on the other, separated by a pedestrian walkway. The main building, a former residence of the Nara Prefectural Governor from the Taisho era, houses the concierge desk and restaurants. Saryō Zeze, once a temple building, serves as the venue for Champagne Hour. The two modern guest room buildings, on the other hand, are sleek and practical in design, offering a harmonious balance to the property’s historical elements. While the architecture was undoubtedly impressive, what truly made our stay unforgettable was meeting Mr. Naoyuki Yoshimura, the hotel’s Concierge. As travellers who have stayed at luxury hotels and ryokans throughout Japan, we can confidently say that Yoshimura-sama’s passion, care, and deep connection to Nara were like nothing we have experienced before. From recommending Michelin-starred restaurants to hidden local izakayas, and even planning early morning and late-night hikes to avoid the crowds, every single recommendation from Yoshimura-sama was impeccable. What set him apart, however, was his unwavering dedication to ensuring our experience was perfect. After we raved about an exceptional local umeshu we had at Kappou Matsuki, he took it upon himself to call the restaurant and several liquor stores in the city to track down several bottles. Unprompted, mind you! It was such a thoughtful gesture that left us deeply touched and we snapped up every bottle we could! I could easily share many examples of how Yoshimura-sama’s impeccable style of omotenashi elevated our stay. His passion for Nara was contagious, and his unwavering attention to detail surpassed even our experience at a Ritz-Carlton a few days later. He truly made the city come alive for us, and thanks to him, we left with a deep affection for Nara—a destination often overshadowed by the allure of Osaka and Kyoto. As for the room itself, it was modern, stylish, and incredibly comfortable—perfect after a long day of exploration. As Titanium members, we were graciously upgraded to a room featuring a rotenburo, where we could soak in simple onsen water while enjoying views of a small maple tree and a tranquil zen garden. This peaceful retreat was especially soothing during the rare moments when the snow gently fell. For breakfast, we opted for the Japanese breakfast both mornings, and on the second day, the team tailored the menu to offer us a fresh variety of dishes so there would not be overlap from the first day. Reading reviews from when the hotel first opened, I understand the breakfast was initially a point of contention, but it’s clear they’ve listened to guest feedback and made significant improvements. This was, without a doubt, one of the best Japanese breakfasts we've had—on par with top luxury ryokans and hotels alike. Each dish was prepared to perfection. In conclusion, if you’re planning a visit to Nara, don’t just treat it as a day trip—spend a couple of nights at the Shisui Luxury Collection Hotel. If you’re fortunate enough to meet Yoshimura-sama, you're in for an exceptional experience. The hotel is lucky to have someone like him representing their brand, and we’ll certainly be returning to Nara in the future, thanks to his infectious passion.
When we prepared for Japan we wanted to stay in Nara for 3 nights though it is rather a day tripper destination. We did not want to stay in Osaka and feel the hustle bustle of big city. Researching hotel I found this one and the reviews were mixed. I must admit I had some reservations about the hotel and expected some problem. But what happened? The reviews were utterly wrong. This is a wonderful property situated in historical building right next to Nara park as well as all main temples. It exceeded our expectations by far and we had a very relaxing stay here. Check in was quick, good english and we were shown chair and room where Japanese emperor ratified San Francicso treaty in 1951. Presumably no else has sit in that chair from 1951. I love places like this so this was a win immediately. Quick check in and we were shown into our room. Hotel is divided into two parts..reception etc and rooms are on the other side of the road. Road is pedestrians only and walk from reception to room wing is 1 minute. We had rooms on ground floor /2 rooms for 2 adults and 2 kids 11+/. Both were next to each other and situated right into beautiful japanese garaden. I mean I loved view of Tokyo from 36th floor but this one was even nicer...pacifying and very relaxing. There was nothing amiss with the rooms with all amenities as well as services being 100 percent. None of the aircon issues mentioned in other review nor problems with english, but then this is Japan and everybody speaks japanese right :) no english necessary though it is a nice bonus. So I absolutely recommend this hotel and definitely advise to stay here more then 1 night. Enjoy Nara once the hordes leave after 4 pm and do some full day trip and enjoy this tranquil gem of a hotel. Loved it, loved every minute here. Bye Nara you are beautiful.
This was my second stay at Shisui, The Luxury Collection Hotel, Nara, and I was genuinely happy to be back. I think Nara offers a different kind of charm compared to Kyoto—there’s a slower, more peaceful rhythm here that allows you to quietly connect with nature and history. Shisui reflects that spirit beautifully and with great care. The location is ideal. Major cultural landmarks like Todai-ji, Kofuku-ji, and Mount Wakakusa are all within walking distance, which made exploring easy and enjoyable. One of the highlights for me was a quiet early morning walk on Mount Wakakusa—the crisp air, the stillness, and the gentle scenery along the way made it a peaceful and deeply memorable start to the day. I also loved wandering through the charming streets of Naramachi, and the nearby bus stop for Yakushi-ji and Toshodai-ji was very convenient as well. What made my stay truly special was the kindness and sincerity of the staff. Everyone I interacted with was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The “Garden Delight” champagne service in the early evening was a lovely touch—sipping champagne while gazing out over the beautifully maintained Japanese garden was one of those quietly perfect moments I’ll always remember. My room was spotless, serene, and extremely comfortable. Although I had dinner outside the hotel this time, I thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast each morning. The menu changed slightly each day, which was a thoughtful gesture for long-stay guests. I was especially touched when the chef graciously prepared eggs benedict upon request, even though it wasn’t on the menu. I’d like to express my sincere thanks to Mr. Negishi, Natsuki-san, Miku-san, Kinoshita-san (apologies if I misspelled any names), and to everyone I encountered—from the chefs to the housekeeping team. Your care and dedication came through in everything you did, and it made my stay feel truly warm and personal. I would love to return in another season to experience a different side of Nara. Thank you once again for such a wonderful and memorable stay.
