The Fox and Hounds Historic Hotel

Most Noble Sirs and Worthy Travellers, We did recently take rest at The Fox and Hounds, and I must say it was a most agreeable stay. The Great Hall was grand and welcoming, with a fine high timbered ceiling and a roaring fire that warmed both limb and spirit. ‘Twas a fine place to sit and take one’s ease after a day’s journey. Our chamber was well appointed — the bed soft and sound, and the view from the window did look out upon the water most pleasantly. All was clean and in good order, and we slept right well. Though the inn bears the look of times past, the comforts were well in keeping with modern need. We left rested and content, and would gladly return should the road lead us near again.

The owner was very friendly when we checked in and warned us about the water situation. Fortunately, we were given 6 large bottles of water in the fridge to make up for this. The room was very spacious and clean, with cutlery and appliances that made cooking easy. The bar had a great range of drinks and a good atmosphere that fit with the old-English style. There weren’t many places around except for the port Arthur historic site and a couple of stores, but there was enough to make the stay enjoyable.

Absolutely applaud by our experience and the way our stay was handled. Booked two rooms for two nights. Choose this place from what they had to offer with having a restaurant on site. Booked it 4 months in advance. Received call from owner day before confirming. Arrived to only find out the restaurant has closed indefinitely despite the flags and signs out the front, no one told us the day before when they called. Not much food choices in the area. Room was extremely run down with dirty windows, cob webs all over the ceilings, spiders running around, cob webs and lots of dust on the bed head, pillow was filthy and really didn't want to put my head on it. Room was also dusty and doesn't look like anyone had been in there for a long time. Assuming new owners as we stayed here two years ago and was lovely. Very far from lovely this time. Addressed our concerns to the front desk, advised owner would call us, received no call. Next day saw front desk again and assured owner would call us right away, no call. Left several messages since we have left a week ago and still no call. Very disappointed and would not recommend this place to anyone. Overpriced for just a room. The next morning woke up and saw someone putting the flags and signs back out the front even tho they still weren't open and serving.
