Lovely hotel with very polite and helpful staff. Breakfast was lovely! Room was clean and a lovely comfy bed & pillows. Taking into account the age of the hotel it's in good condition with the odd updating here and there. Would definitely stay again.
This hotel exudes the charm and atmosphere of bygone decades — somewhere between the 1950s and 1980s. If you are looking for something special, you will find it here: a heated towel rail in the bathroom, lovingly selected tiles, a heated swimming pool (indoor and outdoor) with water temperatures up to 32 °C, and a cosy bar where you can enjoy classic British afternoon tea at 3 p.m. In the evening, excellent cocktails are prepared by a charming and attentive bartender, accompanied by piano music and views of the harbour, the “Iron Pracht,” and the Ferris wheel. However, a closer look reveals some shortcomings: a changing area that smells strongly of urine with mouldy grout, a swimming pool that is also in need of a thorough cleaning, and some areas of the property that feel dusty and worn. A fresh coat of paint, a proper hygienic deep clean, and new bathroom grouting would greatly improve the overall impression. Nevertheless, the property retains the unique charm of a bygone era — reminiscent of the German 1950s film classic Three Men in the Snow — something rarely found today. Dinner was sensational — the chef is absolutely first-class for a hotel of this category. Breakfast was solid and tasty, although the vegan selection was rather limited.
Located right by the beach (across a main road) in Torquay, right by the station. Great spot. But so is premier inn, which would have been cheaper than this. Our room had so many different slanty walls that sitting in the bathroom legitimately started making me feel dizzy. The room was tiny, no actual space to move. It was insanely hot, with only a tiny fan to help out. It was a very hot weekend, but the lack of air con was very problematic, for a predominantly summer destination. The shower curtain was mouldy. We had to ask for a hair drier since the attachment for one was in the room, but not an actual hair drier. We had rung down to reception. It arrived a few hours later. We were woken at 7am by the shattering sounds of all the glass recycling being dumped into a truck outside our window that was lovely. Dinner was lovely and acceptably priced and the service staff were also lovely, no issues. We did not use the swimming pools/gym/spa so no comment there. All in all, I'd have rather spent less to go to the premier Inn across the road which would be consistent rooms, not mouldy, and have air con. This was a good example of why "local" seaside hotels are struggling. There's nothing Grand about this hotel.
