The Hydro Majestic Hotel

We had high tea booked here last Saturday and the view from the restaurant was so beautiful. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated with Christmas decor (Christmas in July). Service was great, but having the staff coming to our table with the bill before asking for it, felt unprofessional and rushing us to leave. The scones were delicious, the savoury was so and so, and most of the deserts were nice. Price wise, I felt it’s quite expensive for the quality of the savoury food. Overall it was a nice experience.

My recent stay at the Hydro Majestic had its ups and downs. The hotel itself is truly unique and worth exploring, offering a fascinating glimpse into history. My room was comfortable, and I appreciated the character of the building, even though this did mean a few creaky windows and doors. However, there were a few issues. The bathroom had a persistent damp smell, which wasn't ideal. The food at the on-site restaurants and bars was overpriced and quite average. I wouldn't have been happy paying full price, but I was initially unconcerned as I'd been given a yellow paper upon check-in stating I had a $100 food credit. This is where things went significantly downhill. Upon checkout, I was informed that the yellow paper was given to me in error and that I was responsible for the full bill. This last-minute revelation left a very sour taste and completely overshadowed the otherwise pleasant aspects of my stay. To compound the issue, I emailed the hotel to provide feedback and allow them an opportunity to address or resolve this privately, but I have received no response or explanation. The misleading information about the food credit, coupled with the lack of follow-up, was a significant disappointment and ultimately tarnished what could have been a memorable stay at the Hydro Majestic.

I stayed at the Hydro Majestic recently and was quite disappointed with the overall experience. The room was small, with no space to place toiletries in the bathroom, which was frustrating. The sink tap was poorly designed—my hands kept hitting the sink while washing, making it uncomfortable to use. The TV was outdated, with very limited viewing options, and I noticed spiderwebs in the room, which made it feel like cleanliness wasn’t up to standard. The cabinet/wardrobe was also very small, making it difficult to store clothes and luggage comfortably. The lift was slow and jerky, which was not ideal, especially for guests with mobility concerns. For a hotel with such a strong historic reputation and premium rates, I expected better comfort and upkeep. The building has charm, but the rooms and facilities need serious updating and better attention to detail.
