Our stay at Machiya Takayama was nothing short of exceptional. We spent four serene nights in the Deluxe Japanese Garden Suite, complete with a nice hinoki bath. The neighborhood itself is peaceful, which perfectly complemented the quiet ambiance of the property. Its unassuming facade blends seamlessly with the neighborhood. The coin laundry facilities were incredibly convenient, especially for a multi-day stay. The thoughtful amenities and tranquil setting truly elevated our experience. The staff at Machiya Takayama truly stood out—they were consistently friendly, polite, and hospitable, making us feel genuinely cared for throughout our stay. If you're looking for a place that combines authenticity, comfort, and understated beauty, Machiya Takayama is a must-visit. It’s more than a stay—it’s an immersion into Japanese tradition and hospitality.
The best hotel we had. The staff is amazing, the hotel is neat, the private onsens are great and the lobby is the nicest, with complementary snacks in mid day. We came with a car and had a fixed reserved parking nearby with great daily rate. The location is good, just a short few minutes walk from the old town. We stayed 3 nights and really enjoyed!
Location is reasonably convenient and the evening staff members were helpful in facilitating a change of rooms for our family of five. However, there are some design issues. As it’s an old building, the stairs are very narrow and it is challenging to bring the luggage up and down. I also found it uncomfortable to be staring at a wooden beam in the ceiling above my bed. Don’t think it was worth the money. We checked out after one night as my wife and I started having breathing difficulties in the room. The air felt heavy and we eventually opened the windows to let fresh air in and maxed out the purifier. They should consider removing the carpets and the useless sofa in the corner. The morning receptionist was definitely not empathetic. Her response was that we are the only customer to make a complaint since the hotel was opened 5 years ago. Gee…thanks.
