The Red Lion

Stumbled upon this little jewel quite by accident -got lost looking for the Eggesford pub with the train station and just got too hungry to keep looking 😂 The food was top tier and our server was fantastic! I was very pleasantly surprised and will be back.

Walked in on the off-chance after long journey to rural campsite, on Good Friday. It was busy but staff very welcoming. Got us a table right in the thick of it where you wanna be on a Friday night. Live music was great foot stamping stuff, menu brilliant, I could've eaten all of it, food was delicious, beer was perfect, overall superb atmosphere. A pleasure to find a real country pub still exists and hasn't gone all "gastro" but stuck to it's roots and has a friendly local crowd as a result. Thumbs up!

We didn't stay here but had an evening meal. It's a quaint little pub that ticks all my old codger boxes. A good choice of ales and wine together with pleasant staff and a friendly atmosphere. What's not to like? Perhaps our meal, which was a bit of a mixed bag. I think their strength is the pizza judging by its popularity. The wife thoroughly enjoyed hers but my chilli con carne was a bit thin and lacked flavour. Not a deal breaker but then my dessert arrived. It was a banoffee 'thing', and all I could do was laugh. Skye, our lovely waitress, was so apologetic for bringing it out. You need to see the photo. Unfortunately it wouldn't give you much faith in the kitchen. Despite this we had a pleasant time and the pooch enjoyed lying in front of the real fire.
