The Spencer Hotel by Castle

Great location in Takapuna, 5 mins walk to the beach and close to several eateries. Our third stay in a family suite. The apartments are somewhat dated, though they are spacious, well kitted out with a dishwasher, separate washing machine and dryer, and the communal facilities are excellent - large outdoor spa and pool, gym and tennis courts. Staff at front desk are helpful and friendly. Will be back.

The best you can before getting into the luxury hotel prices. We were there for a few days at the start of our honeymoon. It was the perfect place to settle in while we adjusted to the new time zone. Just few minutes walk to restaurants and entertainment, and grocery store nearby too. View of the beaches and island was amazing. I appreciated the water, cookies and tea and coffee in the lobby. Kitchenette and laundry/dryer was convenient. Pool, hot tub, tennis court and gym were clean and had all the amenities needed. I took one virtual international meeting and wifi connection worked well.

Booked this hotel for a colleague and am absolutely embarrassed. I wish I had read the reviews. Firstly, there's no restaurant or bar. They offered "heat and eat" options via microwave for $25. The whole hotel is tired, dated and underwhelming. The lobby is unkept and the staff weren't overly welcoming but were okay. The room wasn't serviced once during the whole 4 day stay and when I went into the room I was embarrassed. The furnishings were basic, the carpet was nearly threadbare. The towels were average at best. To be honest, I was so embarrassed that I offered to move my colleague to a real accommodation venue. When we offered our feedback directly to the hotel they didn't even care enough to respond which reinforces the late of care and hospitality. Avoid at all costs. Only benefit is the location.
