#⭐⭐⭐1/2 Pleasant Stay Despite Room Condition at Sonesta Select My recent stay at Sonesta Select in Laguna Hills offered a mixed experience that ultimately leaned positive thanks to exceptional staff service. The hotel's greatest asset is undoubtedly its personnel, who demonstrated genuine hospitality throughout my visit. Thefront desk, associates (Maria and Anna ? I can’t remember their names) we’re especially kind. When circumstances required a late checkout, the front desk staff was remarkably accommodating and understanding, handling the situation with grace rather than the rigid policy enforcement you might encounter elsewhere. This level of customer service makes a significant difference when you're traveling and plans shift unexpectedly. The common areas of the property are well-maintained and the location provides convenient access to local attractions and amenities. My room featured a comfortable bed that provided restful sleep and functional amenities for a productive stay. However, the room itself showed noticeable signs of wear and tear that couldn't be ignored. Scuffed furniture, dated fixtures, and some minor maintenance issues revealed that renovations are likely overdue. While everything remained functional, these cosmetic issues detracted somewhat from the overall experience. Despite these shortcomings, the combination of comfortable accommodations, excellent service, and convenient location makes Sonesta Select Laguna Hills a solid choice for business or leisure travelers in the area. With some attention to room refurbishment, this property could easily earn that fifth star in the future.
I’ve previously stayed at a Royal Sonesta in Portland, Oregon for six months and had a wonderful experience, so I assumed this property would be comparable. Unfortunately, it was not. When we arrived in the early evening after a long day of travel, our bathroom was dirty—most notably, the tub was full of pubic hair. After not being allowed to check in early and then discovering this, I was disgusted. I went to the front desk to ask for a refund or to cancel our reservation (we had only been there for 30 minutes), but was told that was not possible—even though I had purchased trip protection. At that point, I felt I had no choice but to stay. It only got worse from there. Less than 24 hours later, I went to the front desk to ask for pool towels because there were none by the pool. A younger staff member offered to get some for me, but another woman—who seemed to be a manager or in charge—harshly stopped her, telling her not to give me any towels. She then turned to me and told me to “get them outside,” which didn’t make any sense. I was confused but walked away. Later, I asked a maintenance man if he could help, and he initially agreed—but then came back and said he was told not to give me any towels. At that point, I was baffled. Why were multiple employees being instructed not to assist me with something so basic? Eventually, I asked a housekeeper, who kindly gave me two towels. I thanked her, took them, and began walking to the pool—only to be approached by the same woman from the front desk. She accused me of stealing from the property by taking towels to the pool and demanded that I return them. I was stunned and completely humiliated. Never in my life have I been treated so poorly at a hotel. The property itself isn’t clean—there are stained carpets, unpleasant odors, and I saw towels being used as mops. The bed seemed clean enough, but that’s the only positive thing I can say. After this experience, I will never stay at a Sonesta property again. This was not just a disappointing stay—it was downright hostile.
I honestly can’t believe this place is still operating as a hotel. The rooms are incredibly outdated, it felt like stepping into something from a hundred years ago. There wasn’t even a basic safe box to store valuables. The worst part, though, was the lack of cleaning service. When we asked the front desk to have our room cleaned, they casually told us that they don’t offer that service at all! They said if we wanted, they could give us some towels and take out the trash, that’s it. Apparently, if you stay for more than a week, they might clean your room once, mid-week. That is absolutely unacceptable. If all you need is a bed and nothing more, maybe this place will do. But if you’re expecting even the most basic level of comfort, cleanliness, or service, do yourself a favor and book somewhere else.
