Had a great meal at The Unicorn Hotel in Gunthorpe last night. The food was absolutely delicious and really nicely presented. There was a good mix of options on the menu, and the timing between courses was just right. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome. It's also a big plus that the pub is dog-friendly. Lovely spot all year round.

It didn't start well. We arrived to check-in at about 5pm and there was no-one at reception. Since it was a hot day and the pub was busy with one lady serving at the bar. She said she would get someone to see to us and after 5 to 10 minutes another lady arrived to give us our keys. We had previously done an online check-in. On getting to our room, we found the room stifling hot, the windows were closed which even after opening it made little difference and there was no fan in the room. We also found that there was only one bath towel so we went to reception to discuss this matter. This again involved a bit of a wait but we were provided with a second towel although we were told there was insufficient fans for all the rooms. The lady said she would have a look around and bring a fan to our room if she could find a spare one. Since we were meeting up with some relatives elsewhere we left our room after an hour but called in at reception on the way out to ask about the fan. The lady said she would continue to look and put one in our room if found. On returning to the Unicorn about 10pm we saw the lady at reception and although they did not find another fan they gave us the one they had on the reception desk. So at least we got a refreshing breeze from the fan while we slept. While our initial contact with the Unicorn was poor, we found the room comfortable, it was clean and tidy. the bathroom was functional and so we were satisfied with our stay.
