Ter Helme – between dunes and honesty Ter Helme is located in the vast dune landscape of Koksijde, a holiday domain that seems mainly aimed at groups such as schools and youth movements. The location is undoubtedly an asset: peace, nature and space characterize the area. The domain exudes simplicity and functionality, but suffers from clear tensions between what it is and what it could be. The kitchen is surprisingly strong. Anyone staying here can count on well-prepared buffets, without frills, but put together with care and craftsmanship. The presentation is simple, as you would expect from a buffet formula, but the quality of the dishes lifts the offering above the average group stay. The large playground is a plus for families with children, although the maintenance leaves much to be desired. The sand is full of wood debris and stones, which undermines both comfort and safety. An additional shortcoming is the lack of drinks service in this part of the domain: parents have to bring in their drinks, which reduces the convenience and at the same time leaves a commercial opportunity unused. The biggest pain point is sleeping comfort. The beds are small, unstable and provide little support. The bobbing feeling with every movement is reminiscent of a night at sea – but without the romance. For those seeking peace and recovery, this is not a detail. Conclusion: Ter Helme is a location with clear strengths – a beautiful location, a well-maintained kitchen and space for play – but also with equally clear limitations.
