We had an amazing time at our stay at Valverde Santar. Everyone we interacted with was lovely and informative. The spa is newly renovated (as well as everything else) and was a delight. The Michelin guide restaurant near was amazing but we ate at the hotel one dinner and it may have been even better. Additionally, we had a lovely waitress, Mafalda, who helped us pair wines, gave us recommendations, and was a true delight! Cannot recommend this hidden gem enough as it is perfect for a romantic and/or relaxing holiday! The hotel and property is fabulous but the staff make this hotel unique, thoughtful, rich in history, and feel like a second home.
Stunning property that has been updated with all of the modern amenities. The rooms, restaurant, library, gardens, and pools (indoor and outdoor) all invite relaxation and serenity. The staff was very kind to our family - and warm and patient with the children. Breakfast was varied, fresh, and delicious. We look forward to returning in the future to see the ambitious Santar Garden project continue to prosper. A unique and wonderful experience touring the gardens
We stayed at this hotel as part of a special occasion - our wedding night - and while there are certainly elements of the property that are well thought out, the overall experience fell short of what I would expect from a hotel positioned at this price point and star rating. The property is beautiful and tasteful. The spa is a highlight - the attendant there was warm, welcoming, and professional - a highlight in terms of service. The pool area is also nicely kept, and the use of salt water in the pool is a detail we appreciated. That said, the service experience overall lacked the consistency and hospitality one would expect from a five-star establishment. There were a number of moments throughout our stay where small service missteps accumulated and created an experience that missed the 5-star mark. For example, during our time at the pool - which happened to be in the middle of a heatwave - we were unable to get any service for nearly two hours. There was no one staffing the bar. It was weird to see a fully stocked fridge on the bar, locked with a literal tick chain and lock - the kind you'd see in a warehouse - but no one there to serve them. It was very odd given there was an honesty bar in the hotel. Since no one was staffing the bar, and there was a phone there, I tried to ring someone as my wife was very thirsty. I called reception, restaurant, the indoor bar, and even room service, but no one picked up. I felt I was covering for a staff shortfall, when I shouldn't need to - especially in such an establishment. The fact no one picked up only made it more surreal - like no one was in the hotel. After 2 hours, eventually someone did arrive and we were able to order drinks. Once at breakfast, I had an unpleasant back and forth with the server. I wanted some toast with butter, but the only bread in the basket was big rolls that wouldn’t fit. I pointed this out to the server and asked if there was sliced bread available, and if not, if I could have a bread knife to slice the buns (myself). The reply was very defensive, with some random excuse, and the server suggested I take the bread to my table, slice it there, and come back and toast it. I only had a butter knife at my table… There were also a few odd operational quirks that created friction. Guests are required to ring a bell to enter several parts of the property - the main door, the spa, even from the garden back into the building - and each time, you're asked to explain who you are and what you're doing. I understand the intention may be to ensure security and privacy, but the implementation felt excessive and at times mildly uncomfortable. When you're already on the grounds or coming from your room, constantly needing to justify your presence detracts from the relaxed atmosphere a property like this should convey. The general tone of service, while not rude, often felt more guarded than warm. Smiles were rare, and basic interactions - whether with front desk, breakfast staff, or housekeeping - didn’t consistently reflect the attentiveness and hospitality that usually define a five-star experience. In a hotel of this level, service should anticipate rather than react, and communication should feel effortless. Here, unfortunately, it often didn’t. Lastly, and perhaps most personally, we noted on our reservation that we were celebrating our wedding night - a detail on special occasions that many hotels we’ve stayed in have acknowledged with sometime small, but always thoughtful gestures. I've had notes, treats/cakes, complimentary spa treatments and even a free upgrade if availability permitted - all these, while by no means expected, have always been appreciated and go a long way in making guests feel welcome. In this case, even a basic note was completely overlooked. I even mentioned it again at the front desk, and it was casually dismissed. It's not about receiving something complimentary - it’s about recognition, and a sense that the hotel values your choice to spend a meaningful moment under its roof. That recognition was missing.
